mi sono ricordata dell'esistenza di sta canzone che è di una bellezza assurda e mi fa venire la pelle d'oca ancora adesso
“Always Returning” author commentary
Story on AO3 here
This work was originally a lot darker than what it ended up being. I was planning on having them actually have sex once and then part, unknown whether they’d ever return. But when I got to that part in the story, I realized I couldn’t do it. I just didn’t think it would work. So while there is an underlying sadness in this fic, it’s a lot less than it would have been.
Other than that it’s quite close to what I had in mind. Basically the very original plan was for Bakugou to lose his Quirk and go to Midoriya, where they would have sex for the first time when Bakugou was Quirkless (and of course that is what happens in the story, too). The inspiration for this story, funny enough, was me mishearing/misunderstanding the song “As It Was” by Hozier. I listened through the entire album the day it came out (3/1) and this was immediately my favorite song on it - I kept listening to it over and over again, but parts of it were too quiet for me to make out the words. And the funny thing was, the day it came out, the lyrics on all those lyrics sites were wrong. Basically I completely missed all the drug references in the song (I heard “highs” as “eyes”, and the site I visited wrote “drug” as “love” or something weird like that). Anyway, to me it was less about drugs (or whatever the song is actually about….) and more about some vague “otherness” that occurs and brings a huge sense of loss and sadness. So I wanted to capture the feeling of Bakugou wanting things to just be as they were before this big life-changing event happened, but knowing that of course they couldn’t, and any attempt to make them feel like that would be a lie. This, I think, did not translate from my head into the story.
At first I wanted to have some kind of backstory included about how Bakugou lost his Quirk - I even had it planned out a little, something about a villain who mutes/steals Quirks who was then accidentally killed, so Bakugou’s Quirk was dead with him. But I decided in the end that the “how” was less important that what came after in these kinds of stories, and I decided not to write it out. The universe of BNHA is wide open enough that it’s easy to imagine a situation where this is possible, I think, without me needing to go into detail.
For some reason, I constantly find myself returning to this pile of wood.
