He's more surprised than anything, he feels immense guilt for her not surviving development, so to know that there's a singuler Ames that survived, and not only survived but created her own happiness and became a queen, that's honestly so much more than he could've ever dreamed for her

See, he knows about the other pairs through Crys. When she was yanked into the Corrupted timeline, the living Ames was still not as big as she was gonna get, because she and her sister were 3 years younger than all the other pairs. And when Neutral Crys met them a second time when the Apocalypse Trio started wrecking the Hopeless timeline, she found out that Ames was married and had four children now, which she told her dad

Mephiles, in Neutral, won't admit it out loud, but he is proud of her, and heshappy at least one version of his dead daughter gets to live a real life, untethered from her twin sister

He also, in top of that, stubbornly rationalized it in his head that Doom was female cause Doom told him how Shadow and Eclipse and any other Black Arms member were and are made, and, yanno, the production of eggs = female in mobian and animal biology, so Doom = female. He absolutely knew that wasn't the case and Doom tried to tell him that, but they eventually agreed to disagree, and to chalk it up to a translation issue, to keep from chasing each other off. (Doom worried their relationship would turn too professional and Gerald worried that Doom would leave him stop helping him due to percieving him as intellectually inferior. They're both equally stupid tbh, where else do you think Shadow gets it.)

“Would you love me if I was a worm” no. I would not. You would not be you as a worm. You wouldn’t have the personality and morals that make you my friend. You wouldn’t even have your name, all you would be called is ‘worm’. I likely would never even see you once, Nevermind interact with your life. You would be a worm in the dirt, and nothing more to me. likely in nearly all permutations of reality where your a worm this lies true.

But is it not better to never have loved you because you were a worm then to never have loved you when you were human? This love is one born from a first meeting after all. That first meeting could have never happened. In many permutations of reality it did not.

One of us could have made a fatal mistake, or met a tragic end, or worst of all, simply never taken a path that led to the other. They would never know that they could have met someone they would have loved, someone that influenced their life so greatly. And they would be all the worse for it, without even regret about what could have been.
