just wanted to pop in and say that iâve come back to reread alterity many, many times over the years (i first discovered it sometime during highschoolâ iâm several years out of college undergrad now) and itâs been incredibly fundamental in my appreciation for good worldbuilding. you guys have created a rich, fantastical world that still manages to feel grounded in reality. hoenn has always been very near and dear to my heart purely for how much time i spent running around exploring the region as a kid, and youâve really managed to capture that same feeling of wonder and intrigue in the lore youâve built here.
regardless of whether or not the comic is updated going forward, thank you for all the love and hard work youâve put into it over the years! truly one of the greatest pokemon fanworks out there, in my humble opinion.
Thanks so much for the kind words, they made my day. Iâm so happy that Alterity was able to inspire you and still brings you joy. Thereâs a lot Iâd change about the pacing if I were to redo it from scratch, but Iâm still proud of the worldbuilding. The Pokemon world has such rich possibilities and it was incredibly fun to explore and expand on them. Super happy that you enjoyed the outcome too.
Unfortunately I no longer have 15-30 extra hours per week to pour into comic-making, and weâre not quite to the point where I can magically transplant the story straight from my brain to the Internet.

I started reading your comic years ago when it had only 3 or 4 pages & it was the first time I ever came into contact with the idea of a nonbinary character. I recently thought about that. By now I have nb friends & thanks to Robin, I never had to have the "but what's your gender you must have one" convo with them... which I think is great. It saved people I love some trouble. Thank you for creating such a wonderful character & educating through your comic.
Hey, Iâm glad Robinâs character could introduce you to those concepts and help you help your friends. Thank you for reading!
The other night I had a dream where you updated but you had a bunch more Pokemon... except the update showed that all of them had died except Dante. In the dream I started ugly-crying when I saw that Talon had died. Just felt like mentioning - your Nuzlocke holds a great and terrible power.
Your story makes me feel like an evil supervillain. Thank you, anon.
Yeeee-ssssss!!! Looking firward to the update! I've been tuning in every day for like a month now! As far as a question goes, how would you explain game corner prize pokemon? I've always thought they were trafficked, poached, or the breeding rejects of rare species. Either way, not a upstanding way to spend my hard earned money (which I won by beating up kids's pets. Details.)
Heheh, yes, those minor details! And I hope the update isnât too disappointing after that long wait.
The trafficked/poached Game Corner Pokemon idea never made a lot of sense to me, mostly because Game Corners are such public places. Yeah, theyâre often run by Evil Teams, but the Pokemon are RIGHT THERE for anyone including authorities to see/buy, so to me it seems kind of stupid for a Pokemon trafficking ring to show their hand so blatantly by selling illegal wares right out in the open. I dunno, what do other people think?
Edit: What other people think:
Anonymous said to alteritynuzlocke:As sad an explanation as it is, I don't think it's a bad explanation to say that the game corners bring in decent money for the city's that own them, so authorities might turn a blind eye to their bad practices. The anon might like to know that at least in Team Rocket's and Galactic's cases, the game corner is located in a town that contains one of their main areas of operation
@pokemaniacal said to alteritynuzlocke:On Game Corners: I'm reasonably sure the Celadon one is the only one that we know *explicitly* is linked with Team [X], and in fact it stays in business after the player takes down Team Rocket, so I *suspect* that what we should take from it is that selling PokĂŠmon is perfectly legal, but Team Rocket happens to be selling PokĂŠmon that were poached or stolen, perhaps with forged records or certificates or something, but other similar establishments' PokĂŠmon were captured or bred legitimately.
Anonymous said to alteritynuzlocke:I don't think the game corner would be trafficked/poached pokemon, but I do think they would still come from shady sources. Maybe similar to puppy mills, large amounts of pokemon kept in small cages and bred in bulk for profit. Not outright illegal, but still morally reprehensible.
@bizarrekitten said to alteritynuzlocke:I've always thought the police force in the Pokemon games was just inept, considering they need a 10-year-old to take on a criminal organization for them. Not that logic was ever a strong point of the games.
@inksword said to alteritynuzlocke:Re: Game corner pokemon. I always imagined it something more like having an exclusive and very expensive contract with high quality or high quantity breeders. Casinos can give away huge prizes in real life because they know for every 100,000 car they give away for 10,000 in coins, they rake in a million. The pokemon are probably super expensive to buy with real money from breeders, but with game corners you can DREAM if you're lucky!
Anonymous said to alteritynuzlocke:I honestly always thought that, when you get a game corner prize pokemon, it's more like you get a very young one, or maybe even an egg which hatches immediately. Sort of, like, you buy to right to have these rare pokemon on your team, making them more of a status symbol, I guess? I never put that much thought into it, though.
@pidgeling said to alteritynuzlocke:I think it depends. In the game canon Pokemon can't 'explain' being poached, but if they were distressed that would probably be noticeable, so they're probably either farm-raised on a fairly large but legal scale or taken young enough not to remember. In an Alterity-style 'verse, I can see pokemon being promised a chance to join human society, learn the language, etc, then getting shipped off as a prize with no legal recourse, a la illegal immigrants who don't speak much English.
Anonymous said to alteritynuzlocke:Always figured the Game Corner was a pretty clean operation, Pokemon 100% legally obtained. Are the Pokemon treated that well? Probably varies from Corner to Corner, but ultimately, there's nothing wrong with them - except when they're being used as a cover for an actually illegal operation (because why would something covering your illegal operation ALSO be shady as fuck? Giovanni isn't an idiot).

How does alterity handle pokemon wearing clothes? I know Talon wears the bandana and that Machoke wears sunglasses but what about pokemon that already have things that resemble clothes? for instance: Machoke's shorts, Throh/Sawk's gis, or Gardevoir's dress? would a wild Machoke be naked?
Alterity treats most âthings that resemble clothesâ as actual clothes! So yes, wild Machoke wouldnât have that weird belt by default. They wouldnât necessarily be naked, but if they wore clothing, then the wild Machop in their group would too.
(Donât know about Gardevoir, though⌠to me, Gardevoirâs dress hovers in that weird âis this actually clothing or just a really weird body shape?â area alongside Jynxâs bizarre dress-thing.)
