[ A heads-up: I’m going to be rereading Professor Moriarty: The Hound of the D’Ubervilles here and there when I have down time. I will be live-blogging about it and posting a bunch of rebloggable excerpts that I use as inspiration/headcanons but you’re welcome to them because a) they’re not mine to keep and b) this book has some really great moments.
I don’t know how excessive this is going to get but if you want to opt out I’ll tag everything but the headcanons with ( mun; liveblog ).
Been meaning to do this for a while! I’m hype! ❤ ]

♈ a holiday drabble featuring our muses
Salvation always had joyous Christmas arrangements. The town was filled to the brim with snow and was roaming with small children, wrapped in scarves. It was hard for Nora to walk all the way to town at this rate to get medicine for her mother, but the white knuckles and chapped lips had to be endured.
She stepped into the shop, immediately warming up her hands. Money was scarce for the Dale family at this point, and Nora did not see gloves as a necessity. The old coat on her back and scarf that was falling apart did the job. She walked along the aisles, looking carefully for the items that she required before the brunette bumped into Peter. Nora took a sharp breath, knowing it was hard to pretend like she hadn’t of seen him at this rate. So, the Dale girl simply did her very best impression of a friendly smile.
“Burke.” She simply greeted him. It was exclusive to Peter. She didn’t bother calling Essie by her surname. It was always like Peter had this halo around his head, like a golden glow. He was the town hero, but not to Nora. To Nora, he was Essie’s dick brother who thinks of himself too highly.
“Dale.”
That was enough interaction. Grabbing the medicine, she turned to leave before tripping over a bunch of stray items on the floor. Christmas bobbles, of course. She heard his faint laughter but decided to shrug it off, simply heading to the counter and then out her way into the cold.

“Get off the floor.”
Nora spat at Peter, fists clenched and coated with a diastrous mix of purple, blue and red. So far, she had the upper hand. No Essie, no Johnny to stop her. Strands of the brunette’s hair had fallen in front of her face and she furiously brushed them aside. It was almost as if her hues were begging him to get up so she could drive her fist into his stupid face once more.
“You’re a bitch.” Peter Burke finally said, causing her eyebrows to rise. She had expected more, but even the word he hurled had a effect. Had their venomous exchange of insults been worth it? The brunette simply watched Peter pull himself to her feet and she sighed, not sure if the fight was worth it anymore —
He had managed to drive a blow. It knocked the wind out of the brunette’s stomach, but it merely fuelled her anger. “Asshole.”
And that was it. Nora delivered one giant blow to his solar plexus and made sure he remembered the pain, and to avoid her from there onwards.
☹ My muse is visiting your muse on their death bed
Essie was in pieces. How else would someone react if their big brother was due to die soon? An illness, was it? ( Not that Nora was paying much attention, of course. )
Visiting him was an obligation she had for her friend. The Dale girl very much doubted Peter had an aching desire to see her, but Nora found herself inclined to do so. Equipped with his favourite flowers, she walked into his room and immediately deflated. He was evidently in pain, but it felt as though the Burke boy had chosen not to show it. “Hi.” Nora greeted, placing the flowers down beside his bed.
No reply.
“I just wanted to apologise...” Nora trailed off, fidgeting with her hands. She was raw like this, vulnerable and soft. He still did not bother opening his mouth to speak to her, though.
“I just... wanted to say that... you’re not all bad. We may have... not seen eye to eye, but you weren’t a totally shitty guy. I kind of... actually admired you. And yeah, Essie and I don’t always get along but... I’ll protect her.” Nora spoke softly. It was a promise, sealed with good intentions. She would take care of his baby sister once he was gone.
All he could do was offer a nod.
