In 8x07, after Dean's Wuthering Heights moment, Castiel says he was "trying to reach out, but for whatever reason, [he] wasn't at full power, so [he] couldn't connect with [Dean]". Sam then posits this could be why Dean kept seeing him.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that was the only instance in the entire show's run where Cas - or any angel outside of archangels, for that matter - is mentioned to be capable of communicating telepathically with a human who's awake. Not to mention how many plot points this ability invalidates by virtue of existing.
Dean was written to hallucinate his man, but execs had a heterosexual freakout and forced a no-homo handwavy explanation in, didn't they?
