As I write this, I am staring at my dad, who is in the final stages of the disease. At this point he can barely move his left hand and that is all. He requires nearly constant care and can only communicate via eye-tracking software that was given to him by the ALS society. It has someone else's name on it- which means the disease killed that individual, and it is a good decade old. He gets very frustrated using it and still fights to write with his non-dominant hand instead. I'm home visiting for the weekend to help both he and my mom out as she is his primary caregiver. Last night I discovered a handwritten page with "I want a hug" and lost it.
I would post a picture but he hates me seeing him like this, so I'm not even going to ask.
I write this solely to bring awareness to the real reason behind the "challenge". There are doubtlessly other subs where this would be more visible, but I'm more of a lurker than anything.
I have been watching him die for 2 years, and you have a bucket on your head with no idea why.
