Here's a spiel I wrote about them! C:
In short : Veterinarian-turned-time-traveller was caught up in experimental portal tech in the early days of the Celestials' work. They got transported to Darkmoor with no way out, and in the dimension jump their matter got mixed up with the metal bits on their person. So, poor fella wound up in the middle of Darkmoor with impervious skin and started being a veterinarian for the supernatural beasties with no fear of being bitten or mauled.
Dr. Quartz was mainly a relief veterinarian in their timeline, but fascination with the Institute of Future Technology’s work in 1991 led them to fitting an internship into their routine. The internship evolved into part-time work over years, as Quartz found interest in invention that paralleled their passion for veterinary medicine. They joined a subset of Institute Scientists focused on collecting observational data and lost journal entries from inventors and great minds from the past.
In Doc Brown’s meeting with the Celestials, they brought up the first successful teleportation technology recorded on Earth, and discussed that the inventor would never be able to meet with them to teach them of the technology. The Celestials, collecting knowledge as they sought to build portals to new worlds, asked for use of the Institute’s resources to find records of Dr. Seth Brundle’s teleportation device before everything was destroyed shortly after its creation.
Long story short, Dr. Quartz and team found the remains of Dr Brundle and his teleporter with the coordinates and time stamp they were provided. They located his records and hastily made the jump to Celestial Park. There, Celestials used his work in a crude early model of a portal. Dr. Quartz aimed to return to Celestial Park for the first test in one of the prototype 8-seater DeLoreans, with coordinates and a timestamp provided (interdimensional time travel gets muddy). On entry, the first test was already in motion and the flux capacitor technology powering the new device hit interference with the incoming vehicle.
After a grand show of blinding electricity surges and a deafening overamplification of fluxing sounds, Dr. Quartz was expelled from the DeLorean and thrust across the teleporter threshold. The next thing they knew, they were in some dusty Victorian-looking place and miraculously unharmed.
It’s late and my writing brain is not here, but to sum up, Dr Quartz went through the teleporter with multiple metal bits on their person (watches, glasses, buttons etc) and matter got mixed in error by the experimental tech. Dr Quartz came out with impervious skin, and no way out until the Celestials could finalise their portal tech - the experimental teleporter had no return receptacle in place. So, making the best of the situation, Quartz got a room at The Lion’s Head and started getting to know the place. They started seeing a lot of wounded bats and wolves among other creatures, and got back to work as a veterinarian.
