I really loved how this piece turned out :) It has a more cartooney-disney princess feel but that works for the character and her pink sidekick I guess.
Axolotl (axolote o ajolote in Spanish) are a beautiful type of salamander native to Mexico. They can regrow entire limbs and retain their juvenile features for life (as they present neoteny). Sadly, like so many other species, is currently threatened; critically endangered. Tourism, growth of the city and contamination of their habitat are big issues for them where they live in Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City.
(I had 2 more paintings planned for this Mermay but I guess I'll have to post them in June 😅)
