Audio Drama Sunday - 19 April
Our Wars Have Ended started this week! And I havenāt listened to it yet (because I was reading Plain Bad Heroines instead). Iāll listen to it next week.
š John Carpenter Presents Something Wicked ā S01: E01. NO BODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION: from the episode title, I was expecting this to be a comedy (because the director of The Thing (1982) is known to be a barrel of laughs, clearly). Itās actually a pretty serious horror apparently inspired by real events. Set in New Orleans, it follows a young historian/tour guide and a grizzled senior investigator as they reluctantly investigate supernatural crimes together. Itās a little like a serious version of Victoriocity.
š Gospels of the Flood ā 01. Epistle to the Faithful - 03. Terrible Majesty: this one is interesting, and very other-worldly. Itās a mini-series about a priest in a flooding world, who loses his faith and seeks out the priests he trained with to see if they still believe. On the way he finds a crumbling lighthouse, a very creepy church and various other things. Check the trigger warnings before listening.
š¹ @theredactedunit ā S1E15: Gnome - S1E16: Donāt Eat the Seeds: yess, Redacted is back! So far Eli has made up one terrible excuse for an aberration (thatās our⦠toddler), Sloane and Dr Danse are still fighting and Eli has been called an aberrant fruit. Always a good and slightly ominous time with the redacted unit.
š£ Time:Bombs ā Pink Mist - Countdown: if it wasnāt for one other podcast, this would have been my favourite audio drama this week. Time:Bombs has foreshadowing, character development and half the cast of Wolf 359! The dialogue was quick and funny and Simon Teller was very cool. If you liked Brooklyn 99 or you want to spend 55 minutes listening to the exploits of a bomb squad on New Yearās Eve (when business is booming), you have to check out Time:Bombs.
šŖ¦ Somethingās Amiss at Juniperās House ā The Day I Didnāt See Juniper: Oof, Finleyās still reeling from what happened at Juniperās house. And things are getting even weirder with Sage! I feel bad for Wyatt, who actually noticed something odd only to get shut down about it.
āļø Almelem ā Episode One: The Baptist - Episode Five: The Beginning: and this is my favourite podcast of the week. Almelem destroyed me. Itās a historical comedy about two con-artists creating a messiah. Itās about people who truly believe in Jesus and people who just want to get rid of the Romans. Itās about friendship and belief and being a better person. Itās perfect for people who are religious (in a theologically spicy way), people who are atheist and people who like Terry Pratchettās Discworld. Jesus does not have a single line in this. I cried.
Also, if you want more historical fiction podcasts like that, hereās a whole article recommending some.
