Hiraeth /hɪəraɪ̯θ/ is a Welsh word that has no direct English translation.  An attempt to define it : homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed. It is a mix of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness, or an earnest desire for the Wales of the past.

Saudade  is a Portuguese or Galician  word that has no direct translation in English. It describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing may never return.  A stronger form of saudade may be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing.

A conversation between mediums, between distances, between gentrifying neighborhoods, between the imagined, the forgotten and the new, between deep holes and high cranes.

COLLAPSIBLE SOUFFLé: (cartography + scores + performance research) This research will jump from improvisational scores & cartography into an absurd puff pastry of neighborhoods, homesickness, rubble, gentrification & fantastical landscapes.  Conceptually coping with neighborhood growth and loss by superimposing Capitol Hill & the Cascade Neighborhood.  In brightly colored paper costumes, we’ll bravely overlap imaginative psychic geographies on Karl Burkheimer’s sculptural installation “In Situ”.  Ensembles of 2-25 people writing, drawing, discussing, performing, and coping with the impact of gentrification.
