casting in all hunchback adaptations seems to be a v touchy/sensitive subject, and really i don’t think i have seen a version where they stay true to ethnicity entirely. part of this, i think, is because the novel gives almost a free pass on esmeralda’s race. she’s not born romani and so there are lots of mixed influences and opinions abt what is right to do with the casting there and damn my pal i am not the one with all the answers i do not have the Totally True And Singularly Viable response to the problem. mostly i just hope we get better when we can and we learn. ciara isn’t like... a WRONG choice (and again, she is like?? a great esmeralda?? i am cry???) it’s just that no one really has seen a RIGHT choice for esmeralda yet and that weird gray area of source interpretation is a big part of it i think.

great awesome i love it when they give POC roles not only to white people but to gross white people :’) i guess i will just cling to john and keep weeping quietly.... also tbh i have yet to see ciara identify as romani tho so like.... nice she’s POC. closer.... a definite step closer, but still not quite there. but tbh i’m just a fucking egg and probably just didn’t see her saying it. i would really really like to believe she is rip i want at least one non-problematic esme casting....

honestly same @ every production tho...... they make like ... vague efforts in the casting but like really guys i know u can tell that white actors shouldn’t be playing romani characters..... please.... now that the have deaf quasi the next step is an ethnically accurate cast tell ur friends make it happen
