Did you get new shoes for Christmas? New shoes "Don't have polish or wax on them when new". Some come with a "Thin layer of clear coat to make them last while they stay in the box or shoe store". It is good to clean, put a good layer of leather lotion to help break in the shoe, and who doesn't want that? To use a thin layer of polish (clear or color - it's up to you) and wax to protect the leather. In wet area's like Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, it is good idea to add waterproofer, plus a couple of good layers of wax. And if you have leather soles, adding a "Zip sole" a thin layer of rubber, to protect the sole and upper shoe from water and salt stains. Take care of your shoes, and they'll take care of you.
