This painting was created last summer at a residency in Salem, NY. I started the work outdoors then brought it back to the studio where I continued painting. Painting outdoors no matter the scale gives the work a different energy.

There is a sense of freedom in falling, a vagueness and uncertainty in the experience. I am interested in the state of falling; before, during and after. Originally, this stemmed from a personal experience and over time it has evolved into a larger concept. No matter which side you stand on during any type of change, there is a shared sense of collapse and loss but also freedom. This is true whether the outcome is positive or negative. Falling feels intensely individual because of the helplessness that accompanies the descent. More often than not, one falls alone. However, the experience is very human and therefore universal.

'Meditations in Ink' Over the last year, I have devoted a daily practice to drawing with a brush in Sumi ink. The drawings unintentionally took on a life of their own as I was externalizing a recent heartbreak and everyday life challenges.
