Lucas was a good person, or so he hoped. He tried to be polite, only say kind things to others and help people out. But there were certain people he didn’t trust himself to be around. And one of those people happened to be Alina McDowell. Couple that and the fact that he wasn’t completely sober, it was getting harder and harder for him to sit silently beside her. “I think I should go,” he blurted out. “I don’t think I can be here anymore.” 

“Why did I do this?” Nathan looked into a bag containing all the Easter candy he got on clearance. “It’s been like a month. I’m never going to finish all this candy.” He glanced at Alina, eyes pleading, and held the bag out to her. “Please help me.”

“I mean, that’s pure queen shit right there, isn’t it?” Babs grins at the mention of her aunt. “That’s a lady that’s sure of what she wants and won’t shake on it no matter fuckin’ what. Like, do you know how easy it would have been for her to like, cave and just give Javi kids because it would’ve been easier? God knows, people pop out kids to save marriages every other day. But she knows herself and she didn’t fuckin’ compromise for what the guy wanted. Like, damn, you know? What a woman. That’s Schaffer blood right there.” Babs takes a drink and wrinkles her mouth to the side. “Probably somethin’ they should have gone over before they tied the knot, but still.”

“Look, he’s great fun to hang out with at the Herald. I personally like him quite a bit.” He grins over the top of his wine glass. “But that kid is dumb as hell when it pertains to the women in this town. I swear to god, he’s gonna get punched ‘real hard one day and y’all know I can’t be the one to save him.
