Fitz, For The Win
I love seeing how much Fitz has grown over the last two seasons. When we first meet Fitz, he’s not much older than Donnie Gill. He could have BEEN Donnie Gill, except he was lucky enough to find Jemma at the Academy, instead of someone like Donnie’s false friend who was just exploiting him, hoping for a big payout. When Fitz goes on that mission with Ward, we see that he’s a capable spy as well as a brilliant scientist. Ward has to fake being likable; Fitz IS likeable. Second season Fitz is Fitz-on-the-ropes, talking to comforting head-Jemma, showing basement-Ward what hypoxia means, clawing his way out of isolation and irrelevance, trusting Mack and Hunter enough to let them help him, understanding on a visceral level what Skye is going through when no one else can. At the end of the season when he realizes that Jemma might just love him back, he passes his adulthood exam when he asks her out.
We all know what happens next.
Then last night we met third-season Fitz, in full Agent of Shield mode. He’s intense and focused, and he has no intention of giving up on Jemma, ever. His own life matters far less to him than finding any way of reaching Jemma and getting her back. He’s not stymied by shady characters, and, of course, he has a trick up his sleeve. When he finally obtains the artifact, and the word of the day is death, he finally admits to himself that he may never see Jemma again. Then, in an amazing tour de force by Iain De Caestecker, he lets the rock know exactly what he thinks of it. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
