I absolutely despise Goro Akechi apologists.
In fact, I will spit it out. I absolutely believe Goro Akechi deserves 0 sympathy from anyone. He should be vilified and actively hated. Giving him a free pass, to be completely honest, is usually a reason for me to unfollow any blogs I follow. Not that it matters since chances are they never followed me back, but it’s one of my automatic “Sorry, you’re objectively and morally wrong no matter how you approach it” reactions.
When I talked to a fellow Futaba mun, it came to me in amazing context just the intense ramifications of his actions were. Futaba went through abhorrent hell just for what happened. To kill a person’s mother, the ONLY adult and parental figure Futaba had during her childhood after her father left, no less in a SUICIDE right before her eyes, and THEN having her life ruined and getting her entire family to hate her…it’s something that will break any teenager in this world. Oh, to make matters worse, her uncle positively abused her. There was a line about how she was not even allowed a proper bed, much less bathe for a very long time. Compounded with the fact shes reminded EVERY SINGLE WAKING HOUR that she was the one who murdered her own mother. This very action forced Futaba to regress to an almost suicidal nature.
Oh, let’s not forget Haru had to watch the death of her father in the most absolutely horrifying ways possible. Do you know how much this crushed her heart? She ended up BLAMING herself for this for quite some time. This is something no child should ever witness. I absolutely find it abhorrent.
This was, frankly, unforgivable. When I realized all this, it was absolutely unacceptable for me, much less to think Goro is innocent of any shred of blame. Frankly, he deserves and should be despised for what he put people through. Countless people killed just so he can wear the demented mantle of being an ‘ace detective’.
But what grinds my gears is when people justify his childhood as a reason as to why he’s not guilty of anything. Absolute. Fucking. Hogwash. It does not absolve him of anything. There are plenty of characters who, while rather warped from their experience in neglectful or abusive pasts still refused to take out their anger on the innocent.
Rorschach from the Watchmen series is an example. He grew up as the son of a prostitute who clearly once stated in front of his eyes ‘Why didn’t I get an abortion?’ His childhood was abusive and it was clear she did not show him any love or compassion. Yet, it simply hardened him, especially his innate goodness though clashing with modern society in his extreme black and white view of the world. Despite that, he does hold an EXTREMELY strong sense of absolute justice.
Daryl Dixon from the Walking Dead is also a bright example. He was the son to an abusive father and a neglectful mother. In fact, there was a story about how he was completely lost in the woods for many days. He survived, yet when he went home, no one greeted him. He just turned the TV on, as though nothing happened. Despite this he became rather toughened and extremely honest, heck he even risked his life to try and find Sophie even though the chances are very slim.
The above characters are proof that a childhood is no excuse for bad actions. The above were dealt a bad hand, much like Goro (in fact, Goro had it better than they did) yet they never chose to hate people who never deserved it. One thing is clear. Goro clearly CHOSE his path and should be damned for it. He destroyed lives and made a girl’s life a living hell. In fact, Futaba’s interpersonal skills regressed so far that she couldn’t trust anyone that wasn’t immediately in Akira’s circle.
Goro Akechi and his apologists symbolize what I despise the most. The idea that a simple bad hand, whether it be a mental illness or abuse, gives you carte blache to pretty much get away with anything. Even if he’s handsome, it’s inexcusable.
While I despise Goro Akechi, I do find no qualms with any Goro RPer and wish them all the best. Just don’t expect me to buy the whole ‘its okay he had a bad childhood’ excuse. Ever.
