Opened in 2009, Dequindre Cut created a two mile pedestrian and bicycle greenway (extended by half a mile in 2016) between Detroit's East Riverfront and Eastern Market, serving several residential neighborhoods along the way. In the intervening years this stretch of former rail line has also become an important site for urban artwork and graffiti and in 2017 Brazilian artist Alex Senna visited to add this piece where the path cuts through Alfred St. Senna's graphic black and white art is all the more compelling for the simplicity with which it engages the public and shares often heartwarming tales. Senna says this mural was inspired by the dramatic black and white photography of fellow Brazilian, photographer Thomas Farkas.  @alexsenna/

A year after Randy Newman penned “Baltimore” it became the title song for Nina Simone’s critically acclaimed album and the anthem of a troubled city unsure how to recover from 1968 unrest that left six dead and 700 injured. Four decades later Brazilian artist Alex Senna remembered Newman’s lyrics with this work overlooking the railroad tracks and Union Ave in the Woodberry neighborhood. Reacting to the song Senna’s three children huddled against the backdrop of black smoke are his consideration of the impact drugs and racism have had on the children of Baltimore.  @alexsenna/  @baltimurals/

In 2007 two African American architects shared a vision for a new kind of practice and together opened Pendulum Studios on Holmes St in Kansas City’s East Crossroads Arts District. “Long before it was cool to live, work, and play in the neighborhood” the partners were collaborating with the many creative enterprises that already called the district home. When the partners heard about the Jason Harrington, aka @RifRafGiraffe, plans to create a new street art festival, @SolaNoir, timed around the solar eclipse of 2017, they were happy to be a sponsor and “100% geeked out” at the opportunity to have one of the festival headliners paint their building. For his part Brazilian artist Senna whose work “often talks about solitude, love, friendship, passion, conformity and family” responded with this skyward-looking composition.  @alexsenna/  @pendulum_kc/
