About the Book
This catalogue documents a series of portraits on paper by Aleksandar Bašić.
The artist’s initial idea was to create a series of portraits of influential master artists, specifically those of importance personally. It then grew into something deeper, fusing past and present visual cultures.
Two key moments, early on in the project, included (1) a visit to Michelangelo’s house in Florence and (2) seeing Giacometti’s work at the National Portrait Gallery, London. The latter inspired Bašić to begin using a pictorial language that involved working with simple lines, shapes and colours. This early work sparked the series herein.
