Inktober 2018 day 13: “Guarded”

suddenly was in the mood to draw stuff from my old fantasy setting again. all rough sketches, but i’ve been doing lining and flat colors so... i’ll post those when those happen.

bottom right is our hapless protag, a darkness elemental named avery. he has a legendary magical sword and no idea how to use it, and would honestly rather be just exploring the world and hanging out with his friends than trying to save the darned place.

top right is lenora, an energetic young woman who comes to avery’s aid and ends up sticking around and becoming a close friend and loyal ally. she’s exceptionally skilled with knives and daggers, and packs far more of a magical punch than initially assumed in the form of faerie-made, essence-imbued charms she wears. her clothes will serve as armor in a pinch thanks to an earth-elemental brooch she wears, for instance.

bottom left is the lore, a mysterious creature made of a mix of darkness and light. its goals are unknown, but it showed up at around the same time as chaos began seeping into aldos and started helping avery. it’s proven its loyalty time and again, and makes up for its mysterious nature with a seemingly bottomless reserve of snark.

the color scheme for any element-based creature in this setting is going to be incredibly important. non-elementals like lenora tend to sport more muted color schemes, whether out of deference to the seemingly immortal elementals or simply because vivid colors outside of magically-imbued (and therefore expensive) items are hard to come by.
