“Hey, wait, Varian!” Rapunzel called out, stopping him from walking away from her. It had been several weeks now, since she’d first seen him for help with her hair, and since then they’d seen each other a few times in town. Today was one such occasion. But she wanted to ask something, something that had been gnawing at her for a while. 

“Hey, when you said you were trying to understand my hair with science...you know, back when this all started? I was wondering if...well...you see I never really learned any science, stuck in a tower and all...” Rapunzel chewed her lip nervously. Was it weird to ask a kid to teach you something?

Inside Rapunzel’s Journal - Accepting Selectively

Dear Journal,

It’s kind of funny… after a year away from Corona and everything that’s happened since I left, I’m just… I’m not afraid of Varian anymore. Every time I think about him, I just feel… bad.

I know there’s more I could have done at the time, I was just… overwhelmed. I didn’t even know where to start. And by the time I was able to help, he was already against me, already tricking me into doing exactly what he wanted. I think I was more traumatized by the betrayal than anything else.

But after all this time apart, I just feel sad that he felt so bad that he felt the need to attack everyone like that. I hope that Adira’s shadowblade can cut the amber and free his father. That would be a really useful thing to do when I get back!

Eugene liked to think of himself as clever. At least where it counted. Escaping the clutches of evil doers, and making a makeshift rattle to frighten away wild dogs. How to bluff your way out of a bad poker hand and how to talk your way out of a room with no doors. How to find missing princesses and only after spending days with them. 

The utter speed at which Varian chatted away made him question a lot of beliefs. Also just how broad his diction was - unless the kid was making up words to try and impress him. Which, really, he wouldn’t put past anyone. He was Flynn Rider! Once upon a time, anyhow. And now…

“Anti-coagulating formulae two, please!”

Eugene looked over the mess of test tubes and flasks, labelled with paper tape that didn’t really seem to state anything outside of letters, numbers and hieroglyphics. 

“Would you accept some aspirin instead…?”

“It’s the lime-green tube. The - no, lime green, Mister Rider.”

“Ah, lime green.” Eugene began to think he was part penguin, because he could see about six different shades of red. The green though all looked kind of... evil. That gooey, glowing kind that people use to describe bubbling witches potions and slimy monsters from beyond the stars.
