honestly- they should’ve been more careful when trying to find out more about the gift they had been taught. but a child’s hindsight is 20 / 20.

It was a wounded flight yet to have taken place, doomed to a loveless fate before given a chance to be.  Why are you giving me the choice ,  sweet brother o’ mine ?  It seemed uncharacteristically rotten of a sibling  —  but was that not the unsightly point ?  The knowledge that Diluc had never been even remotely acquainted with the creature that pretended to wear the skin of kin ?  But an usurper aiming the knife for years and only incrusting the blade in the flesh when the pain would linger the most as he futilely attempts to grab onto another piece of a family that had then thus deceased ?   Made extinct, save for him .

It still shakes him to think . . .

Mother to father to brother and then back .    Cowardice spells for the desperate wish to stall and pretend lunacy grasped them both into incoherence and vitriol, lies and their slander, but reality dispelled the desire for self-imposed ignorance, fury further sealed the soon future that awaited them both in this gruesome encounter of former connections .

❝    𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭   ,    ❞        as  if  something  inside  of  him  had  snapped  ,  a  gloved  hand  extends  to  snatch  kaeya’s  glass  away  in  an  instant  .    the  liquid  still  inside  sloshes  dangerously  close  to  the  edge  ,  &  then  disappears  .    diluc  is  visibly  tense  as  he  shakes  out  the  last  drops  of  wine  ,  sets  the  dish  aside  to  be  washed  later  .    this  always  happened  .    moments  like  these  ,  he  considered  banishing  the  cavalry  captain  from  angel’s  share  entirely  ,  leave  him  to  waste  his  time  at  cat’s  tail  &  call  it  done  already  .    back  turned  to  the  counter  ,  diluc  catches  the  bridge  of  his  nose  between  his  index  finger  &  his  thumb  ,  hoping  to  pinch  the  forming  tension  headache  away  ,    ❝    i  think  you’ve  had  quite  enough  tonight  ,  no  ?    ❞ 

a  beat  of  silence  .    the  pungent  smell  of  alcohol  suddenly  feels  oppressive  .    thick  &  overwhelming  .    slowly  ,  diluc’s  hand  retreats  from  his  face  ,  and  he  wills  the  frown  set  deep  into  his  features  into  something  less  telling  .    turns  around  to  face  kaeya  once  more  ,  knuckles  resting  on  either  hip  ,    ❝    haven’t  you  got  work  in  the  morning  ?    ❞

     all too way and way too quick to process at the moment until hours had passed by and their mind had caught up to them. all they knew was being gently shaken and woken up in a state of panic followed by kaeya’s worried look directed at albedo themself. reaching forward and outstretching their arms followed by moving slowly and embracing the other; clinging to kaeya’s mid-torso as if were like a support, their form of comfort. 

     screwing their eyes shut as they clung to the other, breathing unevenly as they continue to remind themself in their head ‘it was only a nightmare, it wasn’t real and won’t happen. mind coming to a quick halt and body flinching at the sudden contact of a hand on their back at the moment before remembering and letting the little voice speak in his mind.

     ‘it is only kaeya with you, he is the one comforting.’

     they didn’t want to speak, emotions all hit at once like a truck. they just hopped the other knew how thankful for the other and how much by body alone kaeya could tell from the ease to now calming and stable breathing compared to the frantic just few minutes ago.

     looking back to just what happened a few hours ago, kaeya showed up at alice’s place; drenched in rainwater and suitcases in tow behind his person. he was glad it was him and alice home at the time and klee was out at school for the day so she didn’t have to see kaeya breakdown at the moment. being the one that the other clung to the moment, the distinct feeling of the tears making their shirt damp as they held kaeya at the moment; hands making motions on his back like how rhine used to do the same with them. the strain upon hearing about crepus, the fight kaeya had with his brother to leaving and now where to go but alice’s and rhine’s. to how happy and relived albedo felt upon hearing alice that the other can stay with them. 

      the day was a whole ride of emotions from bad and panic-filled to good closing their eyes and pushing the thoughts and memories from earlier to the back of their mind and focusing on the moment now. in turn, putting the thoughts of how kaeya finally calmed down and the excitement klee had shown after coming home and seeing kaeya. 

      pressing their forehead against the other’s chest, moving to get more cozy and comfortable. they’re were always close enough to cuddle, it felt right and natural to them to do this since kaeya was someone they were close to, someone they had so much platonic love for. it may be a queen-sized bed but they wanted to make sure the other was comfortable and felt safe. 

bennett preens beneath the praise, an excited grin on their lips. “ thanks ! ” their green eyes shine excitedly. “ i’ve worked really hard to improve my bladework. ” they extend a hand to the cavalry captain. “ but i think i have a long way to still go, before i’m as half as good as you are. ”
