Why couldn’t the rumors just be rumors? Just for once. Was that too much to ask? Given the giant bugs that seemed to fade in and out of view, it definitely seemed that way. 

Nigel had been out of a walk, trying to clear his head, anything to shake off the exhaustion that felt like an almost literal weight on his shoulders. It had to be something to do with the sewers. That was the only explanation he could think of. Whatever he had felt had seemed to suck the energy right out of him. Still, he wasn’t one to let a little extra weight slow him down. 

Although, it was enough to make his long strides take a bit more effort than usual, which wasn’t a good thing once he had realized he was being followed. The sound was soft, a skittering of many legs. When he had first turned to look, he hadn’t seen anything, but then there was a shape, faint but there. He could feel it more than see it. An insect, a few of them actually, giant and hot on his trail. 

Stubborn as he was, he knew he wasn’t in the best shape to deal with the things at the moment, so he ran. He was near the docks, thinking the ocean air might help clear his head. So much for that. Nigel wasn’t the type for sprints. He could run, but his strength was in distance and endurance... although the exhaustion was sucking that away from him bit by bit. 

There were more of them up ahead, so he turned. Mistake. Some of the docks connected to each other. But others just came to a dead end. And it seemed like he was about to do the same. Reaching the end of the dock, he turned, seeing the faint shapes of the bugs approaching. They were almost on top of him. There was nowhere else to go.

So he jumped.
