Since the dawn of time there had been some who spoke the words of the unprivileged, when they themselves are silenced by the privileged. To wage war, to wage an argument, to wage internal conflict: there must always be a subliminal voice of reason. That reason conquers all known aspects of conquest. Referring back to savage wars, economical destruction, The Cold War, a voice of reason has always been the climax of any just resolve. This is why the human race is dominant over all other’s on this molten rock we call earth. We as humans, are genetically codded to ooze out fragments of reason, some more easily than others. “Within you, you will find everything you need to be complete.”- ― Bryant McGill, denotes the truth of mankind. Within us all, is a voice of silent reason, haunting us like the sky itself. Some are more able to evoke this voice of reason, while others corrupt it and taint it with evil, having no disregard for the future of their own race. Among those who chose to manipulate their voice of reason for a just cause is a very iconic individual. That individual being Naji Al-Ali, one of the most important Palestinian figures known to mankind. This renowned cartoonist used his sense of reason, bending it into a form of literate art. This breathing form of literate art evoked current news regarding Palestine’s brutal occupation in the Middle East in the eyes of a common Palestinian. These “graphic” pieces of literate art arbitrary filled the void of common Palestinians silence regarding public affairs during his era, and more importantly, it gave the Palestinians an icon to refer to when at times of despair and blindness. This icon of peace dyed in ink forced his own mind set of “reason” onto even those who never seemed to see it. He raised his hands in anger, in passion, with reason, and used them to fight what seemed an unwinnable war with not his fists and stones, but with his pen. Al-Ali’s work had ruffled the feathers of Arab elites for ages upon ages. He slowly but surely became one of the most famous and iconic cartoonists, not only to the Palestinians, but to those in Europe as well. He continues battering at the oppressors and the privileged of the Middle East, despite the hate, the warnings, and the shallow death extortions. This chronic lifestyle of Al-Ali lived on until he was shot on July 22nd, 1987, when he was shot in the head by a lone assassin when walking into the London office’s of the Kuwait newspaper. He was then placed under a coma for five weeks, where he confronted a cold death. Al-Ali did although leave behind his mind set of wisdom, carved in the minds of those who called themselves “Palestinians”. Until this day Naji Al-Ali remains a hero in the Arab world, specifically to the Palestinians. He is the symbol of reason, trust, truth, and most of all hope to those of his race. It is at this time one must ask; to what extent did Naji Al-Ali truly change the lives of the Palestinian society of this era?
