The giant red-winged ape known as the Tallis of Atonement (ToA) prepares to deliver a knock-out blow to the U.S. navy airship Roanoke in the sunset skies above Akron, Ohio, in this vintage postcard from god-knows-when.
In the same way that Pandora’s “box” was actually a large jar which contained all the evils of the world, so Cardinal Manheim’s “cage” wasn’t actually a cage imprisoning the ToA, but a wayward Maersk Line shipping container salvaged off the coast of New Zealand in 1937.
Bought at blind auction in Aukland the following year, the ToA was released from the battered shipping container by Baby Gruenwald during an episode of his radio show “What’s The Worst That Could Happen?”
