Mortar and pestle are a must for alchemists. Most use it to grind components into smaller form to be dissolved or extracted. Crystal mortals with pestles made from volcanic rock can crush ingredients and draw out abstract characteristics of subjects to be infused into potions. The ”bravery of a knight” from a stoic shield, the “fury of fire” from a dragon’s spine, the “the love of all beings” from the hair of an angel. Soon in alchemy you stop distilling and combining physical characteristics and start extracting meaning and ideas.

We are each our own living experiment in distilling spirituality from the messy rooms of our lives.
