This truly felt like a hidden place: In New York’s Park Amory, an astonishing installation, Hansel and Gretel, created by Chinese artist/activist Ai Weiwei and the Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre du Meuron. A totally dark tunnel led us to the vast and blacked out Drill Hall where interactive projections mapped our every move. Drones buzzed over our heads, infra red cameras captured us in frames that we could expand and contract with our bodies. It was playful, intriguing and eerie: a fascinating representation of surveillance in ‘an age of constant scrutiny and data storage beyond the knowledge and control of ordinary citizens.'Then we were led around the building to its grand Head House and the second and highly informative part of the exhibit – also interactive - which took us through facial recognition and the long history of surveillance.
