(chapter 1 excerpt under the cut)
"Well, I am glad that someone taught you how to swim ... I assume at that posh school of yours", John replied jokingly. "Had the roles been reversed I would not have been much help, I'm afraid."
The joke landed with the grace of a parachute made from concrete and John regretted his words immediately, as he watched Sherlocks face grow almost grey under the stark hospital lights.
"You don't know how to swim!"
Thankfully John could just catch hold of the tightly gripped cotton sheet to pull his unresistant friend a bit closer. "It's fine! Everything worked out in the end."
"The fact that you wouldn't have been taught to swim as a child did not even occur to me!" Sherlock seemed genuinely appalled by his own oversight and John had to tug on the sheet several times to regain the other mans attention. Pale eyes were staring down at him with trepidation.
" It's fine! As soon as that stun-interference got to me knowing how to swim would not have made any difference and I would have ended up here either way." Sherlock opened his mouth as if to object, but John gave him a hard stare and the other mans mouth promptly snapped shut again. "Now, get that chair over here, you look like you are about to fall over. And then you are telling me everything that I missed since the explosion!" Another glare. "Just do it."
And Sherlock, his eyes never leaving John, complied.

Chapter 6 out of 8 (WIP)
« "But I forget, breathing is just a boring waste of time to you and this ..." John gestured in the direction of the phone. "Is just a series of interesting puzzles, nothing more!" His voice broke off and he sounded out of breath.
Sherlock swallowed hard, the tea in his stomach suddenly feeling like it had been a grave mistake. There was so much he wanted to say. He wanted to defend himself, make the other man see his reasoning and at the same time he wanted to fire some devastating response and hit John where it would hurt the most. It took all his willpower to do neither of those and respond in his calmest, bored tone instead. "Yes, is that news to you?"
He could just imagine how Johns eyes would shutter at the words. How he would pull up straighter, square his shoulders and put on his most stubborn expression. It was not what Sherlock wanted, but it would put them on some sort of equal ground at least. Both of them stoic and stubborn and desperately pretending their unbotheredness.
But when he stole a glimpse across the room the other man had not returned to his customary soldier face, instead he stood slumped over, his eyes glued to the floor and looking far too vulnerable. Without a look in Sherlocks direction, he covered the yoghurt back up and returned it to the fridge uneaten. "No. No, I suppose not." He muttered in the direction of the closed fridge door. "Of course you wouldn't see any sense in caring." »
-> Emotions come to a boil right before Sherlock and John start investigating Moriartys 4th riddle and John contemplates the starry night sky that he so rarely sees all this way underground. <-
This is chapter 6 of Beyond the Dying Light, which is the 2nd part of my ongoing Sherlock series All is Violent, All is Bright. A BBC Sherlock fanfiction set in a dystopian London of the future where technology has advanced to a point where brain implants and augmented reality are the norm.

Chapter 3 out of 8
The world as we know it is gone. The lands lay barren and all that remains of the places of old are rubble and ruins. The only way out is down. But humankind persists, adapts, evolves and reinvents itself. And underground the cities of old rise once more.
A BBC Sherlock fanfiction set in a dystopian London of the future. Due to destruction and pollution, human life has shifted below the surface. Meanwhile, technology has advanced to a point where brain implants and body modifications are part of everyday life. John, a soldier who has just returned belowground after many years of service on the surface meets Sherlock, one of the rare people who cannot get any augmentations due to medical reasons.
-> After his not quite so romantic holiday at the seaside John is back in London and the 221B roommates stumble right into the next mystery: an explosion too close to home, a dead mans phone and an old pair of boots are all they have to go on to solve an over 20-year-old case. And the clock is ticking. <-

Sherlock is bored and looking for something to do - preferably nothing that involves menial household tasks or meeting his brother. In the aftermath of the case of the Blind Banker there are whispers of a new threat on the horizon, a master criminal who seems to have a frightening amount of control over the brain implants of everyone within his vast reach.

I did a thing and wrote a fic. I even finished it! It's part 1 of a longer science fiction-y series, that will eventually feature Johnlock as well as some choice canon divergence up until some variation of The Empty Hearse. Part 2 has 6/8 chapters written and chapter 1 is up already.
I would love it if you could give it a read. Writing this is the best escapism I have had in a long time!
