Trying to rewrite the orca selkie story. Got 800 words in before realizing that, no, while Iām closer to the tone I want for the story, the actual meat of the story is way too buried and Iām starting with too much backstory.
*rips it out, starts over*
Ways to find out just how limited your medical knowledge actually is: write a book with a protagonist whoās a doctor. Ā I swear I spend half my time writing looking things up, fromĀ āwhatās a first responderās priority list when assessing an injured patient?ā toĀ āwhatās the protocol for open/infected wound care when you donāt have access to modern hospital equipment?ā
I chopped off 1800 words off of this story to try to squeeze it into a wordcount more fit for submission.
And I broke the story. Completely. Apparently the wholeĀ āsevered feet washing up on the beachā motif is actually important. Without it, the whole thing is a mess.
Okay, back to the drawing board and a complete rewrite.
*falls on her face*
First draft ofĀ āThe Five Foot Summerā is complete at...8600 words.
Which is at leastĀ 2600 words too long to be able to sell easily to any of the markets that would like it.
Also, sadly, the title no longer quiteĀ fits, since the titular feet have been reduced more to a motif than a plot device. So Iāll have to work on that.
But itās the first new story Iāve completed in a long time, so Iām going to celebrate that.

Got a rejection from a market this morning that I was actually relieved to get, because the story I submitted has been through the critique process since I submitted it and Iām in the middle of a rewrite.
Iāve got to get my act together and refill my supply of saleable stories. though. Iāve got two that need revisions, one under draft, and about five that are basically half a paragraph and notes likeĀ āI DONāT KNOW WHAT HAPPENS BUT MAKE IT AWESOMEā.
Me: *needs to find out what preserved whaleskin might feel like, for a story*
Me: *googles "whale leather"*
Me: *discovers that if you are very rich, you can own a car with a whale penis leather interior*
Me: While interesting and somewhat revolting, that does not answer my question.
