(Translator’s Notes: This one is pretty much aimed at @aishakami~ Your art is wonderful and you spread Yuuichi love all over everyone’s dash, which is also wonderful. The heart meme was such a sweet idea~ So here’s the first of two interviews about Yuuichi. Tbh there’s probably only two, but this one was great imo. I had a lot of fun reading and translating it~ Otomedia is the BEST for cute stuff~)

Highly Recommended Character – Tsurugi Yuuichi

With his reliability on the field and the heart wrenching fate he’s burdened with, Yuuichi has moved the hearts of many fans. We asked his voice actor Maeno Tomoaki-san ALL about Yuuichi’s attractive qualities!

Tsurugi Yuuichi

Kyousuke’s older brother. In the world changed by El Dorado, he’s no longer injured and can continue to play soccer. However, he accepts his true fate as no longer being able to play soccer due to an injury and all the while thinking of his brother Kyousuke, he supports Tenma.

When Yuuichi was able to play soccer with Kyousuke for just a little bit, I was smiling so much as I tried my best to draw it well. Kyousuke had also kept his distance from soccer, but in that short scene for just a moment they could remember the childhood joy they shared together while playing soccer. I think it’s a great scene. I think that Inazuma is basically a fantastical series, but it also has moments like this.

Maeno Tomoaki

Born on May 26th. Member of Arts Vision.

Before you joined the show, were you aware of its existence?

Of course, I knew about it. In my case, I too was a member of the soccer club when I was in school, so I was glad that I could participate. And my niece and nephew say they love the Inazuma Eleven series, so I guess they have something to brag about now, don’t they? (laughs) Those were my feelings.

When you actually joined, how did you feel?

Since I was planning to play a character from Inazuma Eleven, naturally I assumed I’d be a character that plays soccer. So I was surprised that my character’s legs were injured. I understand he’s a very important person for one of Raimon’s Key Players, Kyousuke, and always supports him, so I’m really pumped to play Yuuichi. But seeing the other characters who play soccer and summon keshins makes me want to do that too (laughs).

How do you understand Yuuichi’s personality?

Hmm. Since there’s quite a big age difference between him and Kyousuke, I think he has a high-tolerance for Kyousuke even when he misbehaves, and always treats him with kindness. Since Kyousuke is the one responsible for Yuuichi’s injury, he feels guilty about it but Yuuichi expects that and so always uses kind words with him. I think he talks to Kyousuke very maturely, like an adult.

He’s a really amazing older brother, isn’t he?

He really is. A teenager that acts like this is too good to be true! (laughs) Since he’s 18 years old, it’s been established that he behaves a little more maturely and sensibly than the other characters.

Yuuichi in Chrono Stone was very reliable.

He seemed like a completely different person. Since he hasn’t been able to play soccer up until now, he hasn’t had any battle scenes. This time he had a scene playing soccer with Tenma. I think that if the Yuuichi who has been hospitalized for so long were to play a match now, while he would be pumped for it, I get the feeling he might be a bit unsure of himself. However, this time I played him with an aura full of confidence. He grew up differently in this time zone, and that’s a big factor in his confidence and thinking process.

He decided to leave behind the Parallel World where he could play soccer, and return to the true time line.

That was quite an intense decision. As it was, he could have changed his fate… That’s what I thought. But he said that changing it could have caused trouble, so he chose not to. The sense of responsibility he feels as Kyousuke’s brother is very strong, isn’t it. Even though Yuuichi himself loves soccer so much, he says ‘He (Kyousuke) loves soccer even more than me,’. But I think you can’t say which of the two loves soccer more than the other. I think he couldn’t lose to anyone when it comes to his love of soccer. Nevertheless, he wants his little brother to be able to play soccer again. And he has faith that through physiotherapy he will once again be able to play soccer too. So I think that’s why he accepts his fate with such confidence.

If there was another Yuuichi-centered episode, what kind of episode would you like to see?

If possible, I’d like to see him become able to play soccer through undergoing his physical therapy in the correct time line. Personally, I want to see him have a role in helping Kyousuke level up. They could work together with special training in order to come up a new special move or something. I wouldn’t mind if he helped Tenma either. I think it would be nice if he could contribute to Raimon as a sort of trainer or teacher.

Sounds reliable! Apart from Yuuichi, are there any other characters you’d like to try and play?

All of them! But I’d really like to play soccer (laughs).

What kind of story would you like to see about the Raimon soccer club?

I like Shindou-kun too quite a lot, so I wonder if he hadn’t been injured in the final match against Fifth Sector, how would that go? I’d like to see that. Or possibly, since Shindou-kun and Taiyou-kun were hospitalized all at the same time, what if they all met? I think that would be an interesting story.

Do you think that in the future Yuuichi will find a special person to live together with?

Hmm. I can see Yuuichi living in a quiet, peaceful place with a lot of nature, waking up early every morning to hear birds chirp. I think a noisy place wouldn’t suit him – a calm, quiet place is more befitting.

What kind of partner do you think he’d choose? Definitely someone who loves soccer.

I don’t think his partner would necessarily have to love soccer. For example, if he met a girl who liked baseball more than soccer, I don’t think he’d mind too much. But since I think he’s an exceptional person, I think the person he falls in love with will also be wonderful.

What kind of wedding dress do you think he’d choose?

I think that he’d perhaps choose a simple dress, but since Yuuichi seems like he can do anything I get the feeling that he would say ‘Since I draw, why don’t you let me design it?’

It seems like you think Yuuichi would make a great partner, Maeno-san!

I do. He’s very gifted.

Out of all the Inazuma Eleven characters, who do you think would make the most devoted husband?

It’s hard to decide the MOST devoted, but naturally I think Yuuichi would make a good husband. Shindou-kun also seems like he’d care a lot about his wife. But I’m not sure if ‘devoted husband’ is the right term to describe Sangoku-san and Kuramada-san.

Sangoku-san and Kurumada-san seem like instead of dating a girl and becoming devoted to her, they’d want an equal partnership.

Yeah. But I think a wonderful future awaits all of the characters.

Finally, Maeno-san – please tell us about your personal dream wedding.

A modern-style wedding. In a big place with lots of people who carry an omikoshi (portable shrine) (laughs).

Sounds like a festival!

It does! But in reality I’d like a plain, simple wedding (laughs). I’d definitely like something neat and cosy. I’d want to plan it together, going over all the details.

This is a small gift I wanted to make to a fantastic person. Just yesterday I was depressed because lately my inktober doesn’t seem to be appreciated by people, and I put myself to be able to draw (ink!) everyday ...

I wanted to make this surprise for @aishakami ... because this morning I woke up and received a lot of notifications (love, reblog) with compliments on my inktober...  This make me sooo happy!
