Labuan, Malaysia: Part 1
I wrote this about a year ago after a client invited me to Malaysia. I haven't written the ending, so I decided to post the first few paragraphs with the hopes of  finishing the rest soon.Â
---
Arriving in Malaysia gives any Filipino a feeling of waking up in the Philippines one morning while the rest of the country learned to speak Bahasa overnight. Looking at the locals is like watching a Filipino film dubbed in Bahasa. We look exactly the same. I've always known this since we share the same roots, but seeing it firsthand is still quite amusing. I wanted to call taxi drivers "manong" and expected them to respond. Â It made me feel right at home.
I boarded Airasia from Clark to Kota Kinabalu. It's my first time flying with this budget airline and I must say they offer great value for money. My trip was sudden so my ticket was booked only a day before my flight. Airasia's regular rate was still way more affordable compared to other airlines. The seats were exactly what you expect from a lowcost airline but the food was surprisingly good.
The flight was almost half an hour late, leaving me with only 30 minutes to catch my flight to Labuan. I learned that I had to transfer to another terminal so I took a taxi and ran to the check-in counter. I asked the staff if the check-in for the flight to Labuan is still open and was surprised when she answered that I'm still early. I couldn't believe what I heard 'cause at the time, I only had 15 minutes before my 7:30 flight. She said that the flight is at 8:30. Upon checking my ticket, I learned that I was booked for the 7:30 am flight. I was 12 hours too late! With only a few hours to book my accommodation, my flights to Manila, Kota Kinabulu, and Labuan the night before, I missed one tiny detail - the time of my flight. I'm such a genius. Good thing rescheduling was a breeze and I only had to pay 18 MYR. The flight was fully booked but someone just cancelled. Whoever that person was, thank you!
