Anti-perfection: A Rant A pre-thesis project that laid the foundation for my thesis research and experimentation. This zine is an attempt to question and respond to the acute obsession with perfection, order and structure that has been the foundation of my design education and practice. Through the essay, page designs and the format of the zine, I navigate the relationship between structure and meaning while allowing space for chance, serendipity, improvisation, experimentation and intuition. The essay started with a list of words – the cover features words associated with beauty, perfection and order, and the back features words associated with the ugly, imperfect, and the unfit. The page designs are a combination of carefully typeset narrative, gestural compositions created on p5js, and an experiment with ink letterforms. The format of the zine with cuts and folds create a non-linear narrative and chance compositions. Every once in a while, I need a reminder that resting is doing. "You don't need to be busy. You don't need to justify your existence in terms of productivity. Rest is an essential part of survival. An essential part of us. An essential part of being the animals we are. When a dog lies in the sun I imagine it does it without guilt, because as far as I can tell dogs seem more in tune with their own needs. As I grow older, I think that resting might actually be the main point of life. To sit down passively, inside or outside, and merely absorb things — the tick of a clock, a cloud passing by, the distant hum of traffic, a bird signing — can feel like an end in itself. It can actually feel and be more meaningful than a lot of things we are conditioned to see as productive. If you asked me a few years ago, I'd say do it well. Do one thing only, but do it well. Lately, I am all about just doing it — somehow, anyhow. I've realized that doing something well, making it close to perfect is just a way to set myself up for more procrastination and more excuses disguised as some sort of virtuosity. Just doing the thing and putting it out there offers an iterative approach where I can go back and look at all the ways I can do better. The nagging stress and pressure is off.
