Gavin taking off in a jet and running straight into Michael - thus causing his jetpack to explode - is literally the definition of Mavin
Mavin- Let Go
The past four weeks we've been out here, all alone in this sick world, no food, no water, definitely no shelter and no protection besides a tiny knife I carried in my pocket, we haven't gotten anywhere. Just a few days ago, we used up all the supplies we swiped from that grocery store and Michael is out looking for more. I refused to stand. I pinned myself to the ground when he tried to pull me up, but he eventually gave in and handed me a small gun to defend myself. He shot me one last solemn look before he ventured out into the distance and I'm worried sick he won't return.
Life is disgusting. It all happened so fast- too goddamned fast. The infection spread. Worldwide. I looked out the apartment window and BAM. I saw so many. So many innocent lives wasted. Thrown in with the living dead. I couldn't bring myself to move away from the window because of the plump, wholesome bitterness of horror that filled my senses. It paralyzed me. It struck me to the point where I couldn't pick up my feet until Michael yanked my arm and I almost fell over.
My body is a piece of patchwork mess itself- my hair greasy and matted and my skin as pale and indifferent as the state of cold, silent death. Of course my figure was like a twig and was only capable of drawing a bow and not much else, so I sat and waited. I waited for Michael to return and scoop me up into his arms and run his blood-stained hands through my hair.
But I had a dull, almost nauseating feeling that wouldn't happen.
It's like we desire the things that we know will destroy us in the end. Maybe, if I go away soon enough or long enough, I'll forget the reason why I did. And I know the easiest way to do that. Of course, not without Michael. I'm not leaving without him. But, then again, I may be the one that's holding him back, preventing him from venturing out into the world to try and make a difference. There's no such thing as utopia, but there is such a thing as a jagged rock replacing the spot where the heart used to be.
Abruptly hitting my head against the brick wall behind me, I bared my teeth and let the wretched sobs wrack through me. It hurt to move, it hurt to cry, it hurt to hold that gun and the pain was unbearable when I leaned over to put my face in my hands. I've broken down quite enough already, and the sobs that came out now were uneven and scabrous. I in-took sharply and my breath was trembling, the pain benumbing my entire body.
I don't think I can do this much longer.
Tasting what could have been—what should have been—didn't make it easier. I easily got lost in the idea that Michael nor myself would make it out of this reign of terror alive, but I was knocked out of my thoughts when I heard footsteps approaching from the alleyway.
I cursed under my breath and tried to wipe the fresh tears rolling down my cheeks, but to no avail. Michael walked in with a bag full of food and supplies and a smile, which shattered in a heartbeat when he saw my face.
He dropped the bag and his weapon and ran to my side, crouching down. He put his firm hands on my shoulders and looked me up and down, then sighed and moved his gaze to me. His hazel eyes bore into my greens and I had no choice but to turn my head which was gently moved back.
His lips were noticeably curved into a small frown. "What's going on, buddy?" His hoarse voice was nearly a whisper and it caught me off guard. I pursed my lips and tried to keep the sobs from coming, but when the first one came, the rest followed. I began to weep and I put my arms around Michael's neck.
When he wrapped his arms around me, I couldn't let go. I emptied every cry, every scream and every drop of love from my heart as I clung onto him. He shushed me and rubbed his hands in circles on my back- he knew I appreciated that. He made me realize- or, at least hope that I wasn't unwanted and that I wasn't problematic and that I wasn't weak, because crying was okay sometimes.
I pulled away and leaned back against the wall, flinching when Michael leaned over me and pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead. He looked at me with the most terribly sympathetic expression I had ever seen anyone give. They drew me in. I got lost in his amber eyes sometimes, but this time was like no other. They were just perfect in any situation and the light reflected off of them like crystal orbs. He turned away, retrieving the bag and beginning to rummage through it.
It's painful to try and say goodbye to someone you don't want to let go.
"Michael?"
He turned his focus back towards me. "Hm?"
I blindly fidgeted with my fingers. "...What's the point?"
"The point of what?" His eyes scanned my expression and his actions told of concern.
"Life."
"Gavin, what are you ta-"
"Mi-cool, we could stand on the end of a ledge and jump off right now and no one will care, because we're all alone."
He sighed, a deep, muddled sigh. "Gavin-"
"Just think about where we are now, Mi-cool," I divulged. Tears burned in my eyes and I blinked a couple times to get them out. I didn't speak and let those words hang in the air for a while.
"Gav, it's a wild world and the monsters are out. And in the end, the very end, it doesn't matter how many breaths you took, it only matters how many moments took your breath away. That's what we're here for." He picked up his bag and crawled closer, now sitting directly in front of me. I could say so much that moment, but I kept my mouth shut.
He set the bag down and looked at me with that same expression once more. "And you know what I want?"
I didn't reply.
He put his hands on my shoulders again. "I want to see you be brave."
I exhaled deeply. "I-It hurts.....it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, Mi-cool! Everything just hurts!"
"Gavin, please..."
"When we imagine things we don't want to imagine, why can't we stop ourselves?"
"Ga-"
"And why do we have anxiety about a past we can never change?"
"Sh-"
"And if those giant oak trees can hold their ground through the storm, why can't we?!"
"It's because we're human, Gavin!" he finished, his eyes bloodshot- he blinked and the salty tears began falling down. He huffed and turned his head. "We're human, Gavin, but there are very few people among us who choose to be human, feeling fear and pain and knowing damned well that those feelings are righteous."
I let out a convulsed sob as he turned back to me. I lifted my arms to wrap them around his, still placed on my shoulders.
"Mi-cool...I love you so much...so goddamned much, and I'll do anything to make you realize that. But you have to understand, pain is the only thing telling us we're still alive! And we can make that go away, right here, right now!"
"Gavin, stop!"
"Look at your hand."
Michael paused. "...What-"
"Look at your hand, Mi-cool."
He gave me a puzzled look before slowly bringing his hand up from my shoulder to his gaze.
"And?"
"Now, Mi-cool, look at your hand. Just some hand, ready to hold a gun. Some guys' hand. You have nothing to do with that hand. Let that hand do whatever it wants to do."
Michael stared at me intently and I knew what I had to do. I knew what had to be done to convince him. My hands trembling violently, I reached down with a free hand to pull a spare gun from my boot. I struggled to place it gently into his palm.
The tears that had so badly stung my eyes before had broke, running down my face in steady lines. I took a deep breath one last time before raising the gun of my own to my temple.
"Gavin, no-"
"Stop." I pushed his hand away and he gave in, analyzing the glock I had gave him. It told a story, a story of violence and war and terror and asphalt covered the surface, but he sighed and put it to his side.
"We hang on sickeningly thin strings and we don't move a damned inch. Because we'll snap. And I guess this is one of those times." I said. My voice was shaking terribly, but I grasped the concept as well as I could. I swallowed. "Tell the world I died for peace. Tell them I died for pride and tell them I died for relief and tell them I died for love."
"I'm coming with you."
My jaw opened the slightest bit and my heart skipped a beat. I couldn't let him do this, I won't be the one that dragged my own lover down with me. I couldn't bare to live—or die, for that matter—with that thought. "Mi-cool-"
"Look at your hand."
"Please, don't."
"Gavin, look at your damned hand."
I knew exactly where this was going. I let out a shaky breath and picked up my free hand, holding it up to meet my gaze.
I swallowed hard. "...And?"
"Now, Gavin, look at your hand. Just some hand, ready to hold a gun. Some guys' hand. You have nothing to do with that hand. Let that hand do whatever it wants to do."
I clicked the gun and his face fell. I was done with this. "The goal of all life is death. Why are we still here?"
"Because we're stupid, weak humans."
"Right. Do you know what I want you to do?"
"Anything."
"Escape with me."
Michael closed his eyes and let his tears fall freely. "Of course." He raised the gun to his temple.
Damn it. Damn it, damn it, damn it all to hell. I could not believe I was doing this, but I'd do anything to keep Michael safe.
I sniffled. "...On three?"
"One..." he clicked his gun and I began to sob again.
My breathing picked up pace. "I'm so sorry..." I cried, the gun trembling in my grasp.
"Don't be." His lips told of a smile that formed. "You're doing the right thing. And guess what?"
I only shook my head in response.
"We're going to learn to fly again."
My sobs ceased and I built up the courage to finally do this, but not before leaning forward and placing my lips against Michael's. It was blunt, but the most difficult kissed we were ever willing to share. I got lost in the idea that out of all of the hugs, kisses, touches, the pleasure and the lust, this would be our final moment we shared together. I'm going to lose Michael forever.
I pulled away, but our lips still brushed together. I looked into his eyes and he smiled, kissing me once more.
He grinned. "C'mon, my boi. Let's escape this together. Team Nice Dynamite."
That one hit me hard. I let out one last pained sob before taking a deep breath and nodding my head slowly. I was the one who convinced him to do this, I should be going through with it. My nods became more definite. "..Okay. Okay, let's go. I want to leave."
"Alright, Gav."
I sighed. "One..."
"Two..."
"Three," we said in unison, and I smiled at him one last time before applying pressure to the trigger and let go.
The broken birds learned to fly again.
