What are your thoughts on alot of the conflicting information we have on Arendelle's history and backstory? As the the first movie seems to imply that Arendelle (like most kingdoms in Norway) started life as a Viking Settlement, with Viking Armor in the halls, the Book with the Rock Trolls having old Nordic text, some of the painting indicating such, and even the Castle is based off a real Norwegian castle that started as a place of Viking worship. Even some post-F1 tie-in material mentions stuff like Aren The Great (the Viking founder of the Fjord) among other things. But for some reason, some other Tie-In Material Post-F2 implies Runeard was the Founder and First King and that he built the castle. Which ignoring how much it contradicts the first film and Norwegian History, is extremely non-sensical and feels like cultural Erasure, as they are basically implying Norways Viking History was just some fabrication or whatever. What are your thoughts on this?
Thank you for your ask! Such an interesting question!
Well I love lore based around Arendelle's history and backstory. In fact that's what I want Frozen 3 to explore in some way. In Frozen 1 we got a very brief snippet of a Troll taking some kind of magic out of a viking and that book it was from was picked from the Arendelle Libary by Agnarr. It seems the Trolls have a ancestral connection or a relationship with Arendelle during those times.
Runeard being the first king I don't want to believe. Anything outside of the movies and shorts is not strictly canon unless expressed otherwise in the movies. I mean, I just feel he failed miserably as the first king to Arendelle. But I don't think he is. I think, especially with the new royal family member rumoured for F3, the royal bloodline started earlier. And like you said it doesn't make sense considering Frozen 1 but if Frozen 3 is going deep into that norse mythology lore then it's likely that Runeard being the first to throne Arendelle is not true. So basically, if it's not implied in Frozen 2 (I need to rewatch it soon!) then I would say don't consider that canon.
Like it would be so cool for Frozen 3 to touch on the viking roots use this as an excuse to leave more about Arendelle and the trolls. Were the Trolls always good? Where do their powers come from? Like the original fairytale, the Snow Queen, did the trolls come from the sky or land above? That would make sense as to why we see a castle on a cloud. We could possibly see more connections to the Snow Queen in Frozen 3, if that's the case. Omg wait! What if Ahtohallan was a castle cloud but fell to earth and became a glacier - a river of memories. I know that's a bit of a stretch but it's fun to think of. A theory post about the snow queen ties with Frozen 3 is in that works.
As far as Runeard being the first Royal blood of Arendelle's, I wouldn't believe it unless confirmed in strict canon like shorts, movies maybe even books. We'll have to wait and see Frozen 3 for a lot more information.
Hope this answers your question, Whitewolf3710, and thank you again! ❄️
