Delta refinery to convert plastic into fuel
In order to take action against the enormous waste of plastic in this world, Delta Airlines has partnered with Oregon-based Agilyx.
Agilyx is a world leading company in converting difficult-to-recycle waste plastics into valuable resources. They work now with a variety of partners all over the world to solve the plastic waste problem and turn plastics into a long term durable carbon source.
Deltas aim in partnership with Agilyx is it to convert waste plastics into jet fuel at its Pennsylvania refinery, Monroe Energy. The facility will refine up to 2'500 barrels of oil per day by 2020 using synthetic raw materials converted from plastic. Delta bought the refinery in 2012 for 150 Million dollar, but the investment has turned out more difficult than expected. They were thinking about a joint venture partner for the refinery. To clearly analyze the possibility of bringing a joint venture partner, they engaged Barclays Investment Bank and Jeffries Financial Group.
Delta plans to invest 120 Million USD during the quarter to maintain and improve the refinery. Agilyx also plans to build a production plant near the refinery, around 25 miles southwest of Philadelphia, in the town of Trainer.
With this effort, Delta does a big step forward in the search for a cost-effective low-carbon aviation fuel.
