He couldnât deny that the new Media Countermeasures Chief was useful for dealing with civilians, who in his experience were touchy, twitchy, troublesome beings who needed near-constant supervision and at least ten months of hard training before they even came near to being reasonable people- but the manâs squawking, whenever it could be resolved into words, grated on his nerves. He seemed to think that around every corner lurked a reporter with a full camera crew and national broadcast coverage, and completely refused to consider that, as Shinoda had suggested to him, if any of them wandered into the Forbidden Zone looking for a scoop about Neighbours or otherwise, they damn well deserved to get killed.Â
And he came up with such inexplicable ideas.Â
âNext squad, please,â said Sawamura. Miwa Squad, their captain looking like death as Yoneya laughingly pulled him away, bowed politely and left the meeting room.Â

âWeâd just sort of like to see moreâŠstature,â said Netsuki. Kazama listened attentively. âNot that youâre notâŠ,â he fumbled. ââŠnot,â he said. Kazama watched him patiently. âWe just feel⊠preferablyâŠâ Kazama dipped his head politely, encouraging him to continue. It was awful.Â
âIf we end up needing you guys, weâll call you,â said Rindo, taking pity. âShouldnât, but just so you know.â
âOur duties as defense agents would take precedence in any case,â Kazama said, mercifully.Â
âYes!â said Netsuki gratefully. âYes, yes, your duties, dear⊠boy⊠you have to⊠attend to those.â He sat back and let his breath out.Â
âNext,â said Sawamura.Â
Jin stepped into the room and saluted smartly. He opened his mouth-
âNEXT.â
He shrugged, blew Sawamura-san a kiss, and sauntered back out. She shut the door after him. âI think heâs the last one,â she reported.Â
Shinoda did not slump in his seat. The commander was going to be quite sarcastic about this. Or worse, silent.Â
The door opened one more time. And it let in⊠a miracle.Â
Who walked confidently towards them, hand outstretched. His teeth gleamed.Â
âI want to volunteer my squad to be the face of Border,â he said.Â
They stared.Â
âWeâre only a B-rank squad for now,â he said. He stared deeply into their eyes. âBut Iâm confident that I know my little brother and sister would feel so much better if only there was someone from Border to reassure them that everything was going to be alright. I know what everyone will feel better knowing theyâre getting prompt and accurate information from people who know what theyâre doing. I want to help the people feel safe.â
The vision paused, taking in their dazed faces. âIs this right?â he said uncertainly. âOnly Jin-san said that you were accepting B-rank squads for review and I should just walk inâŠâ
Netsuki rose from his seat like a drowning man to grasp that outstretched hand. âWeâll have to meet the rest of your squad,â he said.Â
âNot a problem,â said the vision. âThey feel the same way.â
âWe may need to redesign that uniform,â Netsuki said.Â
âWe have some ideas for that when we get to A-Rank.â
âHow do you feel about a pay rise,â said Netsuki.Â
Arashiyama- yes, that was his name, Shinoda remembered now- frowned lightly. âIf you feel itâs necessary,â he said. âBut I consider that itâs incumbent on every Border agent to step forward as duty calls.â He smiled. âBut for my squad, certainly. They work hard and they wonât let you down.â
That was another reason the Media Countermeasures Chief was hard to get along with, thought Shinoda. It was just so damn uncomfortable to watch a grown man cry.Â
