The Best Starting Civilization in Age of Empires Mobile Isn't What I Expected
i picked the "wrong" civilization in Age of Empires Mobile... and i paid for it
i honestly thought civilization choice was just about aesthetics.
like... "this castle looks cooler" or "i like this banner more."
turns out that decision quietly affects almost everything during your first few weeks.
after restarting a couple of accounts (yes, i became that person), i realized some civilizations simply snowball much faster than others.
japan is honestly the safest pick
if someone asked me what civilization i'd recommend to a brand-new player, i'd probably still say Japan.
not because it's overpowered.
because it's consistent.
you get:
Swordsman Defense that actually matters in the early game.
Better rewards from defeating Tribes, which you'll be farming every day anyway.
Strong synergy with heroes most players can realistically obtain.
it's one of those bonuses you barely notice at first...
until another account without it suddenly feels slower.
china feels like playing with a hidden speed boost
this one surprised me.
on paper, extra villager capacity doesn't sound exciting.
in practice?
it's huge.
more villagers means:
buildings finish sooner
resources keep flowing
your city rarely feels bottlenecked
it isn't flashy.
it's just incredibly efficient.
and honestly... efficient usually wins in strategy games.
arabia is the civilization i wish i had later
arabia isn't really a beginner civilization.
it's a civilization that starts making more sense once kingdom wars and alliance battles become part of your daily routine.
the cavalry HP is nice.
the faster food gathering helps.
but the real MVP is the Hospital Capacity.
if you've ever watched thousands of troops disappear after one bad fight...
you already know why that's such a big deal.
egypt deserves way more love
i don't see enough people talking about egypt.
it's basically the definition of steady progression.
extra carrying capacity means every gathering march brings back more resources.
less wasted time.
less wasted stamina.
less frustration.
sometimes boring is actually the strongest strategy.
civilizations i personally wouldn't start with
france
great cavalry bonuses...
except most new players aren't building cavalry armies yet.
the trading bonus also sounds much better than it actually feels.
britain
castle defense always sounds amazing.
until someone attacks you with twice your power.
at that point, another 10% defense isn't magically saving your city.
rome
i actually like rome.
just...
not on day one.
its strongest bonuses really shine much later when your city is fully developed.
if you're free-to-play...
my recommendations stay pretty simple.
⭐ Japan if you enjoy fighting.
⭐ China if you enjoy building.
both give incredible long-term value without forcing a specific playstyle.
something nobody really talks about
switching civilizations later isn't free.
every unnecessary switch costs resources.
those same resources could've gone into:
hero upgrades
research
equipment
city development
planning ahead is usually worth more than chasing the newest recommendation on YouTube.
also... don't overcomplicate account progression
i've seen people spend hours optimizing one research node while making terrible decisions everywhere else.
your civilization matters.
your heroes matter.
resource management matters.
and if you do decide to invest in your account, i'd honestly prioritize reliable payment methods over random marketplaces. i've personally found it much easier to manage Age of Empires Mobile top-ups through a secure recharge platform that focuses on account safety instead of taking unnecessary risks.
anyway...
if i woke up tomorrow and had to start from level one again...
i'd still pick Japan.
not because it's the strongest civilization forever.
because it makes the first month of the game feel noticeably smoother.
and honestly?
that's where most accounts either snowball...
or fall hopelessly behind.
