tell me about for headcanons for Peggy x Steve and their secret liaisons during the war
(i know nothing about how a base was organized/run in ww2, but i’ve never let that stop me before, so...)
They get together shortly after the whole fondue/Private Lorraine misunderstanding. The Commandos have a close call on one of their missions, and they decide that neither of them want to leave anything unsaid because there are no guarantees.
Peggy has a friend stationed at the coast who still rents a flat in London. Whenever she and Steve have leave at the same time, they take advantage of the relative privacy (even if she technically doesnt have permission and has to pick the lock every time). They go to the grocer’s and then cook a meal together in the flat, sliding around the kitchen on socked feet and stealing kisses over dinner. He washes, and she dries, and Peggy is surprised by how much she enjoys herself, since it’s exactly the kind of domestic she never thought she would want.
They know the London base better than anyone stationed there, having taken advantage of every shadowed corner and empty storage room.
They have a rule: if Steve is the one to smudge Peggy’s leg makeup, he has to redraw the line. Peggy is pretty sure he smudges the lines on purpose, but the look of intense concentration on his face as he fixes them is a beautiful sight, and the feel of his large, warm hand on her leg makes it hard for her to complain.
They spend more time apart than together, so they correspond frequently. It’s Steve’s favorite part of the day, reading Peggy’s latest letter by the dying light of the fire as the Commandos converse in the background. He tells her that he loves her for the first time in one of his letters, and he’s so nervous about her reaction when they arrive back at the base. She greets them the same way she always does, hands on her waist and one eyebrow raised, but her eyes are sparkling and his name sounds a little different on her lips, so he figures they’re more than okay.
Their six-month anniversary is one of the busiest days the base has ever had, and they don't get even a spare moment to say hello. After a day full of meetings and briefings and photo ops, Steve is disappointed and frustrated to find that Peggy is nowhere to be found on the base. He returns to his bunk to find his compass laying on his pillow (even though he doesn’t remember losing it in the first place). He opens it to find Peggy’s picture, lips quirked upward as if keeping a delicious secret. He props it open beside him, and she is the first thing he sees when he wakes the next morning.
Steve finds the whole secret relationship thing very hot, with promising glances and sly double entendres and Peggy biting his lip to keep quiet as they occupy a storage closet in a remote hall of the base. That being said, his favorite moments are when Peggy joins the Commandos on missions. He likes that they touch more out in the field, casual, thoughtless brushes of fingers instead of regimented inches of personal space. He likes that he can wrap his arm around her shoulders as they eat together, or tuck a stray curl behind her ear after a battle, or pull her behind a tree to steal a kiss as they return from patrols.
