Leo hated the cold, he absolutely hated it. Snow was nice and pretty and all that, but the below freezing temperatures was just not his thing. It was the only con to not going home for the holidays.
The only reason he was out and about in the freezing cold was because his girlfriend ran out of flour, and no way was he going to let her freeze when he could pick some up on his way over.
So once he arrived at her apartment, after leaving his coat and shoes by the door, he sought her out and immediately hugged her.
"I'm freezing, give me your warmth." He joked, holding her close to him. She immediately snuggled into his embrace.
"You really are freezing, did you even wear a coat?" she laughed.
"I did, and yet I am frozen." He replied as he set the shopping bag by the rest of the baking ingredients
"Oh!" Bekah pulled away to grab a mug from the counter. "This will help warm you up!"
"You made hot chocolate for me?" Leo asked as he accepted the warm mug from her. He noticed she was watching him eagerly, almost looking nervous.
He blew on it for a brief second before taking a sip. It surprised him, how much it tasted like the hot chocolate his father always made for him.
"Y-you're brother said you like it spicy," Bekah began rambling when she saw the surprised look on his face. "And I looked up some recipes online, and I-"
Leo smiled at her.
"I love you."
That made her cheeks go red. He'd never said that to her before.
"I love you too, Leo." She beamed, matching his smile.
"Good," he responded, taking another sip of his hot chocolate. He was almost trying to hide how happy it made him, that she'd said it back to him.
"Alright," Leo prompted. He set his mug off to the side, surveying all the ingredients on the counter. "teach me how to make these. I wanna learn."
Bekah launched straight into telling him everything. She listed the ingredients and amounts, and the order everything was mixed. She had him do a few things, but mostly he stood and observed. He held her from behind, moving with her and watching with his chin rested on her shoulder. It did make it take longer, but neither of them minded
"So, sufganiyot?" He tried, knowing he wasn't saying it right. Leo had sat across the table, decorating a few cookies as she continued to make more of the jelly filled treats. He'd gotten in the way a little too much and had been ordered out of the kitchen.
"Very close," she said, bringing some over on a cooling rack. She taught him how pronounce it correctly, it only took a couple tries.
"They smell heavenly." Leo commented. He was quiet for a moment before meeting her eyes. "I want to spend every holiday with you, mi alma."

What Winter Holiday they celebrate: Chanukah! Rebekah is Jewish and therefore she celebrates Hannukah. (Which actually overlaps with Christmas this year, funnily enough)
Favorite Holiday Food: Latkes and sufganiyot! Latkes are fried potato pancakes and sufganiyot are sort of like little jelly filled doughnuts.
Favorite Holiday Drink: Hot chocolate with all the fixings. Can you have it year-round? Technically. But does it just taste better during the winter months? Y e s.
Favorite Holiday Activity: Telling/listening to the story of the Maccabees. Hanukkah may not be the most important holiday out of the Jewish calendar, but after everything she has been through, the story behind it is important to her.
Favorite Holiday Tradition: When she was younger (before she was kidnapped and forced into a cult), her family would get together for a large dinner on one of the nights of Hanukkah and have what was known as The Great Debate. Which would be when everyone would get up in arms about the proper toppings for latkes. It would always end the same way with everyone agreeing to disagree and it would happen Every Year.
Favorite childhood memory for this time of year: Her favorite childhood memories are always from the last night. Seeing all eight candles lit on the menorah was always something she treasured seeing.
Snowball fight or build a snowman: Building a snowman.
Ice skating or sleigh ride: Ice skating! Especially on the lake in the gardens.
Hot chocolate or Egg nog: Hot chocolate. 110% hot chocolate over anything.
Frost sugar cookies or build a gingerbread house: Frost sugar cookies!
Buy gifts or make gifs: Make gifts! She's a crafter at heart. Painting, needlework, sewing, crochet, you name it, she's probably done it.
Curl up in blankets or sit by a fireplace: I raise you: sit by the fireplace while curled up in blankets. Double toasty warm.
Least favorite thing about winter: How cold it is. It's really a double edged sword. On one hand, it gives snow and the ability to curl up by a nice, roaring fire! On the other hand, most of her plants are now dead and she doesn't have many fond memories of cold places.
Snow or no snow: S n o w. Even if she doesn't really like the cold or cold weather, snow is one of her favorite things about this time of year.
Anything you'd like to add: Bekah has a natural curiosity about other holidays. She's always willing to learn something new about them, but won't necessarily participate in celebrating those holidays.
31. Doing a pinky swear (omfg that is so cute. But I'm also going to break you, Callie. Prepare yourself.)
Henry drives. Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri. It's well after midnight when the child in the back seat of his truck wakes up, looking around, confused.
"Who are you?" She asks, her voice quavering.
"Call me Henry." Any magic this child possessed would be negligible against him, knowing his nsme couldn't hurt.
"Henry. Okay. When can I go home, Henry?" She asks, adjusting her seat belt and leaning forward to look over his shoulder.
"We'll be there soon, Anna."
"Anna? My name's not Anna it's B-" She stops herself with a gasp. Papa always said names had power.
"I know. I know your name. But I'm gonna keep that a secret for you. Your new name is Anna, they'll try to steal your old one."
Bekah, or Anna now, shrinks back in her seat. "How? That's not possible." Is it? Her breathing picks up and Henry pulls over.
"Hey, I didn't want to do this. I'm gonna try to get you back, but it might be a while. It's no excuse but I'm following orders. If I take you back now, neither of us will get there. You're my chance of getting away. Someday, I'll bring you back with me." He pauses, his voice cracking. "We're both gonna go home. Promise."
Bekah rubs her eyes, trying to put on a brave face. "Pinky promise?" She cautiously holds out a hand.
Henry turns in his seat and sees her hand. Promises are even trickier than names. If he promises, he'll be held to it or else. Slowly, he links fingers with her and shakes her little hand.
"Pinky promise. Now let's go be brave. We'll get home, someday."
Is there any way you could tell us about Former Technical Officer Drake? (The one that uses Tom Holland as a face claim?) Like what happened to him that made him become a Former officer?
letâs talk about jude shepard.
and note, that i canât talk about jude shepard without also speaking of where he died.
it isnât often i get to tell a story that begins in one decade and ends over a century earlier.
details of violence, sci-fi-induced stressful situations and implied gore and body horror below the cut. proceed with caution.
turn back the clock to 1996.
judeâthat is, drake, at the timeâwas one of the youngest people ever to be brought onto the basement crew. our watchers pinged him at just 14 for showing exceptional aptitude to what i would best describe as technomancy. the phrase âwiz kidâ was used often, and seriously. but, the then-wyvernâjustineâknew that lilith wouldnât bend on recruitment rules. she waited patiently until jude was old enough and immediately âadoptedâ him as a mentee.
our gate had been completely built by this time. at least, an early version of it.
but we knew way less then, than we do now.
and what we know now, weâre realizing, is still precious little.
i wish that i could tell you what happened to jude was significant. i wish i could say that it was meaningful, that it happened for a just cause. i wish i could say that for the handful of officers our homemade portal has swallowed over the decades.
butâwell.
a year and a month. that was how long jude had existed fully in his role, fully as drake. justine trusted him completely, why wouldnât she? he passed training with flying colors, of course he did, that genius born out of the bronx, maybe heâd graduate to her title someday, of course, why not, heâd make a great leaderâ
so of course he could do routine maintenance by himself.
of course, his hands would never slip and puncture the wrong wire, triggering an instantaneous opening that would have felt like stepping into a sauna turned way too high.
of course, he would never be snapped up, as though raptured.
but they did. and he was.
now, the good news, what slivers of it were to be found, were that we did trace his landing point.
the bad newsâhe wasnât in north america in the 1990s.
he was in 19th century prussia.
and the worse newsâwhich everyone knew was the worse news as soon as they saw lilithâs expression shift when she realized the coordinatesâwas where exactly in prussia heâd been spat out. it was why we couldnât pull him back, even after repairing the gateâs puncture. why we couldnât get a push signal to re-generate to the same point.
brennenburg castle.
she recognized it, of course she did.
alexander.
âlady,â lilith began. her eyes didnât leave the screen, didnât leave the green dot blinking in russia. âwill you please get brosnya on the phone.â
when was it that sheâd last spoken to yekatarina, the head of the order of snow and sun? a year ago? two? five?
because of the atrocities committed in that castle, the order is veryâprotective, of that particular parcel of land. today, as it was then, itâs heavily warded, and regularly observed. the structure itself still stands, condemned and rotting.
lilith had always run on the assumption that, surely, theyâd sent field agents down into the castleâs interior to clear it. to make sure that nothing was left behind that shouldnât be, like sayâa proverbial open door.
an exquisitely, ridiculously dangerous open door.
but she still had a sense of decorum, and wasnât about to point blank ask for some kind of verification as if it was owed to her. after all, the heaviest parts of that investigation would have been years and years earlier.
surely, they had.
surely.
but the unfortunate truth was that there wasnât much to be done. alexanderâs property was cursed, and that curse was powered by something far bigger, and far older, than us. jude was doomed as soon as he hit the ground.
the gate is our homemade doorway. we made it ourselves.
the orb that lilith desperately hoped was in the orderâs protective custody, the entire reason behind the castleâs ruin? was built by something like a god. or gods. weâreâweâre not sure.
but itâs not our fault that research is limited.
remember another time we had someone try his hand at technomancy?
remember the time we hit a wall?
turns out that there is a way behind it after all.
remember, there was never any doubt that it wasnât a wall, and a wall is not a wall without the other side.
if what had happened at brennenburg castle was anything like the world beyond the wall, lilith had zero desire for us, or any other agency, to go there.
more recently, dohbar has been sending her updates. there are seven orbs. âitâs all set up like spokes on a wheel, diana. spokes on a wheel. are we turning? where we are going? how many spokes? and where is the hub, you think? what could possibly lie at the center of something so vast? so ancient? what do you think, diana?â he was getting worse every month. she could see it in his writing. she knew ness was watching him, but not in the role of distant, mournful witness, not like she was watching him.
we have evidence that alexander managed to secure at least a beginning signal, an initial push, to this other plane.
we have no evidence that it was successfully destroyedâbeyond the orderâs word.
but lilith wondered.
justine was heart-broken, which is why the handle was retired for fifteen years, even as her title passed to jeremy, who followed protocol out of respectâup until he actually met drake and it felt a little too much like a âstars aligningâ moment.
a clever cover story was crafted for the benefit of judeâs parents. one that made his ending quick, easy. pure accident. pure fate. pure whatever would bring them peace.
lilith didnât know it. she wept, god, how she cried, for nights, praying for the first time in what seemed like lifetimes to anybody, please let it have been quick. please let it have been easy. please let him be in peace. please let it have been quickâ a never-ending mental prayer chain, timed with her heartbeats, with her jagged breaths. because she knew it had been none of those things. she knew this for a fact. but she whispered into her hands anyway, cupping her own pleas like water to offer to the universe for just this one thing.
at least... as much peace as they could offer at the price of a body. there was nothing to bury. nothing to burn. âweâre sorry. he is gone.â
they bought a plot anyway. they upturned the soil, (âned--neddy? honey, is this--are we breaking the law?â âoh they wouldnât dare touch this flower bed, analiese. itâs--itâs the principle of the thing!â) planting begonias. judeâs favorite flower. and yes, he has a tombstone, calling him by his names: jude levi shepard. beloved son. beloved friend. beloved, beloved, beloved.
jude was âburiedâ in between his paternal and maternal grandparents in a cemetery in long island.
annabelle has a saved photo on her phone from drake of the view from judeâs garden, looking at the cityâs skyline.
@agents-of-virtueâ I feel that it is cosmic fate for me to get you for secret Santa because if I remember correctly you got me last year and wrote me a wonderful red riding hood butterfly knife au piece. Â So in return I wanted to give you an au that I have had stuck in my head for Sleight of Heart.
Thereâs always been a sort of truce between the Assassinâs Guild of London and the cityâs tight knit community of thieves that scour the cobblestones. Â A very mutually beneficial relationship based around the sharing of information and of course the lending of a hand when need be. Â The guild wielding a dagger and the thieves an open palm with nimble fingers- the respected right and left hands that control London as so many in itâs dark underbelly could attest to.
This is the relationship that Guild Council Member, Joan, falls back on when he is compelled to complete a strange favor he owes. Â The favor itself is a simple one: poison a certain judge that has been dealing out death sentences to both career thieves and street urchins alike. Â The request on who is to carry it out is the odd part- his daughter, Rebekah. Â A quiet girl whoâs only tasks so far had been transporting important documents between assassins and picking out the color of ribbon to bind them. Â The request is an assurance that the task will be completed because if she is caught then death is almost certain. Â
With the possible loss of his daughter Joan turns to the streets listening to whispers and asking around for someone talented enough to slip poison into a judgeâs wine glass at a party and just dumb enough to be willing to do it. Â It is with a flourish of recommendations(both because of skill but mainly for the latter) that a young man by the name of Drake is referred to him. Â A true street urchin and Londoner with sleight of hand skills so smooth they seemed almost like magic. Â Although Joan knows very little about the young thief he believes that the kid is his daughterâs best chance at success. Â Much to his surprise however, it turns out the Rebekah is very familiar with Drake having had to deal with his near constant flirtations during her deliveries.
âI always let pretty girls win the first round, love. Â Might even let you win a few to get the taste for it so youâll come âround to see me again.â
So with a heavy sigh and immense love for both her father and the Guild Rebekah accepts his help in poisoning a crooked judge. Â A feat they would have to complete during a crowded party since the judge in question was a paranoid one and getting into his manor was impossible. Â Usually a simple servantâs uniform would suffice for entrance but with the help of a sly hand an invitation is secured- for a couple.
âWhat do you mean you donât know how to dance? Â Arenât all assassins supposed to know how to blend in with high society?â
âI was never patient or graceful enough for classical lessons! Â My governess gave up on it after I hid in the attic and refused to come down.â
âI guess Iâll have to teach you then.â
It does take some time and a few sore toes for the couple to get comfortable with each other as dance partners but soon their movements flow as if they had been doing it since they were children. Â Rebekah is surprised to find that she likes dancing with him, likes his hands on her- even if he uses it as a chance to take everything from her coin purse to earrings with a snide comment of âmaybe you should pay better attentionâ.
The party goes smoothly as does the judgeâs passing in his sleep from the poison Drake slipped into his wine glass out of Rebekahâs necklace. Â It is reported in the papers as simply natural causes and the underbelly of London rejoices at the death of a tyrant while the hands that control it celebrate a young love that ties them together.
(p.s Iâve been working a lot and did not have a ton of spare time to work on this. Â Which is probably obvious since it reads more like a synopsis than an actual story. Â But another present I want to offer is that I will write you anything you want! Â Whether it be an elaboration on this or something else, let me know! Â I just wanted to make sure I got something out for you on Christmas!!!)

Parker awoke with a start- coming to on her back on Carterâs kitchen table. She still wasnât fully in her right mind (thank you Aly and your wonderful medications), but she at least knew she had to check on someone.
â...Anna?â She called out in the darkness, hoping for a response.
âAnna~â a voice sang out, rousing her from sleep.
âAnna-banana~ Wakey-wakey Princess.â A gentle prodding to her cheek and Bekah blearily opened her eyes to see an impossibly wide grin. She smacked Carter with a teddy bear and turned over to try and get some more sleep.
âNope! No you donât.â He turned her back over and hefted her to stand. To say she didnât share his enthusiasm was putting it mildly, but was also slowing ebbing at his infectious smile.
âWhat do you want Carter?â
âEasy. Iâve got a hankerinâ for some cotton candy, how about you?â
â...maybe.â
âI know you do~ So! Iâve got the bike gassed up in the garage, and all tomorrow off so.... letâs go to âDollywoodâ.â
â...Youâve got to be kidding.â
âNope.â
âThis is a prank.â
âNuh-uh.â
âIâm going back to bed.â
âNoooooo! Câmon itâll be fun! ...Iâll win you a prize?â
âYou shouldâve led with that.â She grinned, grabbing a nearby jacket as he whooped and led her out, into the cool night air and onwards to fun.
