When an artist puts out an album that is so good, I often wonder how they get better after. Is there any possible way they can make something better? I felt that way when I heard Little Simz’s album GREY Area back in 2019. That was her third album and each one had been better than the last but with that album, I thought that to be the album that she had been working up to her entire career and it paid off because it was so good. Fast forward two years later, she puts out the lead single Introvert from her new album and I was blown away. When it comes to Little Simz, I always expect it to be good but I was left speechless after I heard that song. How the song starts with the drums and the way those horns come in sounded so epic like she’s making her royal entrance. After a few bars, the beat actually comes in and it’s so layered but still keeps the same enthralling bassline that started with the horns. Simz just comes in with a sense purpose in her voice as she raps about where she stands in her life as an introvert in the chaotic world surrounding her. Not to mention the hook is also phenomenal. That is only the first single as well as the first song on the album and I instantly knew that Little Simz could take it up a level and that is exactly what she does on this album. It is incredible to see the progression of her music since her first album but this album shows her ability to grow and sharpen her already very sharp skills. The second song Woman is another fantastic song that celebrates black women. The jazzy instrumental definitely matches the classy and elegant women that she describes in her verses. Cleo Sol fits the song perfectly with her hook. Little Simz always has had a great ear for production and all of her albums sound different. This album’s production is so eclectic and layered which I love. One thing about this album’s production that definitely stands out is how soulful it can be. Two Worlds Apart and Standing Ovation, while both soulful are very different which is another thing I really like about this album. It may have a lot of songs and have some unnecessarily long interludes but it has a distinct sound with plenty of variety and every song is good. She has fun showing off her skills on Speed and Rollin Stone while getting more personal on songs like How Did You Get Here and Miss Understood. On the latter, she uses the scheme of “misunderstood” being an actual person like “miss understood” and while it has been done before (most notably by Elzhi on his song Misright) I liked how she used that scheme to show how the person she is addressing is taken for granted. Little Q Pt. 2 is absolutely beautiful. That beat combined with Simz’s lyrics about both physical and emotional trauma is spectacular. I also really liked I See You, which is definitely the best song about relationships she’s made. I also loved Cleo’s hook on this song about how she never wants to wake up from the dream of never being alone. Point and Kill with Obongjayar is irresistible; it’s impossible to not sing along to the hook and vibe with this song. I liked how Simz was flowing over this more uptempo instrumental. There are a lot of songs on this album and there is a lot to unpack as Little Simz covers a lot of ground with an array of different topics throughout the tracklist. I really love how personal and introspective she gets on these songs because they really do make for better music. It drives the message home and it also makes the already amazing production even better. That also goes the other way as the production makes Simz’s already impeccable rapping sound so great. Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is easily her best work and I am still amazed that she made an album this great in such a short amount of time after putting out one great album after another. It’s definitely a special album and without a doubt, one of the best of the year.
