The stone-ender is a style of house unique to Rhode Island. This architectural style dates back to the 17th century, and was a common style of home for the state's early settlers.
As the name suggests, stone-enders are houses in which one wall of the otherwise wooden-framed house is made up primarily of a wide stone chimney.
One of the oldest buildings in Rhode Island, the 1694 Valentine Whitman house, pictured above in 1937, operates today as a historic house museum in Lincoln, RI. There are a handful of other stone-enders still freckling the state, and while there are many historic sites of note worth visiting in RI, this is one style of architecture in particular that is truly not to be missed.
