THE PURPOSE (SANS AUs X READER) - ACT 1; CHAPTER 7
You found Dream and Blue on one of the islands. You couldn't help but notice that Ink had placed stairs leading up to each section of land. That sure as hell made things easier, and it made you grateful for his consideration, and the fact that he remembered.
Blue seemed to be trying to solve some sort of puzzle on a piece of paper. Dream watched on, attempting to give him hints only to be shot down comically. They both sat on the grass that covered most of the small floating island.
"Hey."
They looked up at you. Blue grinned. "Human! Come, join us! Watch as I finish this extremely challenging puzzle with skill!"
You smiled and sat between him and Dream. You got a closer look at the puzzle he was working on. It was...Juniour Jumble? From what it appeared, it didn't seem too challenging, but if skeletons could sweat Blue would be sweating over it from what you could tell by the expression he gave. He looked so determined, so focused in on it, you couldn't help but feel a little bad. You decided not to say anything in this case.
Dream smiled at you. "How are you doing?"
You shrugged. You were itching with question, to admit what you'd been feeling lately, but you did want some time to at least catch a breather. "I'm...doing alright, I guess." You gave a laugh. "It's a lot to take in."
Dream nodded. If you were being honest, Dream was the one you felt most comfortable around. He had this aura of serenity to him, some sort of wave he gave off telling you that everything was going to be okay, you needn't be afraid. After all, he had been the first one to offer you kindness in the beginning of this strange journey. After all, his name was Dream--those things you had held onto so tightly all your life, those things that gave you hope when all was lost. Maybe that was part of it. Even now, you felt a warmth towards him, from him.
"GOT IT!"
You jumped, nearly falling back at Blue's exclamation. He showed you the jumble, his starry eyes shining with pride. You thought of pointing out that he had gotten one of them wrong, but you remained silent and let him wallow in his joy. He really was adorable, like a puppy. It was a breath of fresh air, in a way. Some light in the dark.
Feeling lighthearted, you asked, "Are there any copies?"
"Of course!" said Blue, "I've brought plenty! Puzzles are the greatest test of bravery and intelligence!" He picked up a thin book from beside him and tore out a page. This time, it was a crossword. You scanned over it. The first clue read: 'Annoying ___"....um, what? Then, 'need muns to go COLLEG'. Okay...none of this made sense. Maybe it was a monster thing in their world? You cleared your throat and placed it down. "Uh...I'll be honest, this one may be a little...too difficult for me."
Blue shouted, "I KNEW it! Of course, I do not blame you! Puzzles are very, very difficult things." He then reached out and patted you on the head. "Don't worry about it, it doesn't mean you're not still smart. You've got to have some sort of talent, it is just not puzzles!"
Uh...yeah, sure. That made you feel better. Dream gave a light laugh. He must have known what was on that crossword. The stuff on it almost seemed like some sort of inside joke for monsters. Regardless, it felt good to speak so easily, without weight or solemnity. But you knew that would have to change soon.
"Um, Dream, there's something I need to talk to you about, by the way."
He furrowed his brow at you. "What is it, (Y/N)?"
You glanced at Blue. You didn't want to be rude, but you couldn't speak of this in front of anyone else. Even if it were Ink instead of Blue, you wouldn't want to. "Hey, Blue. I'm sorry, but...this is really personal."
Surprisingly, his expression turned serious and he nodded. He must have had a little bit of the original Sans in him still. "It is alright, human. The magnificent Sans understands privacy. I'm going to go check in on Ink." He left the two of you there. A long, strained silence followed, and you couldn't help but fidget awkwardly with your hands. Dream gazed at you hard.
"Something is still wrong, isn't it, (Y/N)?"
You sighed. "Dream, I think...I think I may have been here before," you finally admitted, "It's weird to say, but like...in a past life."
He titled his head. "What do you mean?"
"I mean...well, I've been getting these feelings." You were unsure how to put it into words. "Like nostalgia. Like there's memories there that just won't show." You clutched the sides of your head in frustrated. The more you tried to phrase it the more heated you got. "They're there--I know it--but I just can't grasp them! There are no images, no voices, no indications of a full memory, just a notion, a feeling. I don't understand it!"
Dream remained calm. "When did this feeling begin?"
"In Geno's realm," you told him, "But there it was only the déjà vu. Then, when Ink was talking about Chara, it was like...it was like I heard their voice, but I've never even met them." You sighed. "The voice was so deafening, I could hardly hear Ink's beneath it. I felt like I knew them. I do know them, but I don't know how." You fell silent, unable to go on. It was all so damn tiring, a concept you struggled to understand but no matter how much you tried you couldn't. It just wasn't logical, and logic was what you relied on.
Ink said nothing for a while. He seemed deep in thought. Finally, he spoke. “I don’t know why you are experiencing this.” His words were slow, unsure. This made you nervous. “But I assure you, you’re not at fault here. It could be the stress, too. If you had memories of this place, I would have them too.”
You eyed him. You wanted to trust everything he said. You had no reason not to, yet you were so enveloped in the awful feeling of the unknown that you questioned him. “Are you sure?”
He nodded. “Absolutely.”
You stood up. You weren’t sure you were satisfied with the answers you received, but you now knew that Dream knew no more than you did. It didn’t make you feel any better, but there was nothing you could do about it. As much as it irked you, you would have to figure it out on your own. But you knew. You just knew.
“(Y/n), I truly am sorry...”
You cut him off with a smile. “It’s not your fault. I know there’s something up, but for now I think we should focus on helping Ink.” And you really did believe that. Ink seemed even worse off than you, and if you were to help him as much as you could, maybe your inquiries would be answered. “Let’s go find where him and Blueberry went.”
_____________________
You found Blueberry alone where Ink once stood. He seemed frantic. You and Dream hurried up toward the little skeleton. “What happened?” you worried, “Where’s Ink?”
“I don’t know!” cried Blue, “I can’t find him anywhere! He just disappeared!”
Disappeared? Why would Ink disappear? Unless...
You turned to Dream. You could tell from his expression that he was having the same thought as you. With all the upset from Error and this ‘Chara’ situation, Ink might be out for revenge in Error, and maybe even t uncover this whole Chara mystery. He might have gone after him. You couldn’t say you blamed him, but he left without anyone knowing. Though it was clear he was strong enough to be fine on his own, it still concerned you. “We need to find him. How do we know which portal he went through?”
“It’s too dangerous, (Y/n)!” Blue cut in. Dream nodded in agreement. But...you were sick of this! This entire time all you did was cry and break down, letting the skeletons take care of business. You didn’t want to be the damsel in distress anymore. You had fought monsters your whole life. Even though they weren’t the same kind of monsters, you were a fighter. If you weren’t, you’d be dead already.
“I’m going to help,” you said. Your tone was too firm for argument. “If little Frisk used their wits and their skill to make it out of the Underground, so can I. Even if I don’t fight, I want to help in some way. Any way. I’m not going to sit back this time.”
Dream still seemed weary, but Blueberry shook with admiration. “Wow, that was so cool! I wish I could be as inspirational as you, (Y/n)!”
You chuckled nervously. You weren’t inspirational, just speaking your mind. But you loved Blue’s enthusiasm—it made you feel stronger.
“Well, Ink does not normally shut his portals from here...” You smiled. Dream had finally decided to trust you with this. “So we could see if there’s any open doors. If there is not, we will just have to search the hard way.”
You fist- pumped the air. You were grateful for their support. It made you feel....warm. Safe. “But (Y/n), if anything comes up that you cannot handle, I want you to call for me.”
“And me! The Magnificent Sans can handle anything!” added Blue.
You nodded, that smile never leaving your face. With your newfound confidence, the three of you went to search for Ink.
