Product of the African Centered Education Movement, the Marcus Garvey Academy in Detroit, Michigan is a place where black youth are able to learn the true contributions of African people in world history. Beginning their day with the call of African drumming, students attending the Marcus Garvey Academy recite, "I can learn. I will learn. I must learn." The academy serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade teaching its students African centered education that emphasizes cultural awareness, global understanding and community service. Teachers at the Marcus Garvey Academy highlight what it means to be African and how that identity shapes a productive and competent citizen both inside and outside the classroom. With students from this school excelling well beyond their black peers in public schools, African centered curriculum proves to be a step in the right direction in academically and professionally progressing our black youth. African centered education provides today's black youth with the opportunity to express their identity by embracing their history and using the knowledge and customs they learn of African culture to help shape their education experiences, peer interactions, and future lifestyles.
