How to Initiate an AED Program
Founded in 2000, Access CardioSystems created a user-friendly automated external defibrillator (AED) to help individuals and businesses provide a safety program in preparation cardiac emergencies. As Access CardioSystems often informed its clients, geographic limitations such as living in a rural area or at the top of a high-rise building can delay the use of an AED. Hence, many offices, sports stadiums, shopping centers, and schools choose to have an AED onsite, a policy that often requires community programs for sponsorship and training. The first step in setting up an AED program is to identify the need. This includes determining who will be involved in the program, who will need training, and how many AEDs the location will maintain. A successful community program will consider personnel, equipment, and quality improvement. Program coordinators, trainers, and trainees should be identified, an appropriate AED should be selected, and a quality improvement plan must be put in place to ensure safety and compliance. Developing a comprehensive AED program can help save individuals with sudden cardiac incidents and help to prevent deaths.

Chesapeake AED â AED Equipment, Maintenance and Training
PENNSYLVANIA COAL MINES ARE REQUIRED TO INSTALL AEDS IN MARCH 2013, IT WONâT BE LONG BEFORE MARYLAND AGENCIES FOLLOW SUIT. INSTALLING AND MAINTAINING AED EQUIPMENT IS NECESSARY TO SAVE LIVES.
According to the Associated Press article dated: December 6, 2012, âThe Department of Environmental Protection said the requirement [PA Coal miners will be required to install defibrillators] will be published Friday [December 7, 2012] and take effect March 8 [2013]. It was written by the Board of Coal Mine Safety[i], which includes representatives from the United Mine Workers of America and mine owners.â Many Maryland mining companies have already installed Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs), the equipment used to restore stable heart rhythm in the event of sudden cardiac arrest, and provided the necessary training to use the equipment to ensure the safety of their employees. Having the equipment and training is only the beginning. Regular maintenance and compliance with state laws is also necessary.
Chesapeake AED Services would like to stress the importance for all companies to regularly test and maintain the onsite AEDs to prevent malfunction in the event of an emergency. âA recent study examined automated external defibrillator device advisories during a 10-year period and concluded that, although automated external defibrillators are frequently affected by such advisories, actual malfunctions were rare and the number of lives saved outweighed the risks of occasional device failures;â According to the Annals of Emergency Medicine Journal, (2011) The Analysis of Automated External Defibrillator Device Failures Reported to the Food and Drug Administration[ii]. Additionally the journal states: More than 1,000 cardiac arrest deaths over 15 years are connected to the failure of automated external defibrillators (AEDs); battery failure accounted for almost one-quarter of the failures. Â
Survival from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) depends on the reliable operation of AEDs. Each year, 382,500 people experience EMS-assessed out-of-hospital non-traumatic sudden cardiac arrest. By administering a shock with a defibrillator within two minutes of collapse, the chances of survival of SCA are increased by 90%. The chance of surviving SCA without help is 5% as the average response time for the EMS is 6-12 minutes.
Chesapeake AED proudly offers maintenance programs to help your company ensure the safety of your employees. Â For more information on AED Maintenance please visit: http://cpr-training.chesapeakeaedservices.com/automatic-external-defibrillators-aed/management-programs/

[i] The board was created in 2008 as part of the first comprehensive update to Pennsylvania's mine safety law in nearly half a century. It was designed to keep mine safety regulations current without needing lawmakers' approval.
