Breaking bedrock in the overworld is done for three reasons: for fun, to flatten it out for a base, or to create an access point to the bedrock highway.
The bedrock highway is not technically a real highway, rather being a nickname for a method of travel. The term refers to the act of flying over the void, between two holes in the bedrock.
As you can't place anything below bedrock, marking these access points is very difficult. The best you can do is make sure the hole emits enough light that people approaching it can spot it.
This method of travel is extremely dangerous (given how easy it is to get lost or simply fall into the void) and also limited to people who have a method of powered flight. It's pretty widely considered so dangerous as to not be worth it, given that if you can fly anyway you might as well go over the land.
The bedrock highway is used mostly by criminals, smugglers, and adrenaline junkies.
"Taking the bedrock highway" is also a turn of phrase meaning to take the most unnecessarily dangerous possible route.

Decided I needed a guide regarding pre-dragon endermen in the AEAU, since they are the single biggest change in the entire AU.
Also: yes, I know, my yogscast fan is showing... this au was built around a fanfic, so shush 😜
Image text with some image description under the cut, for people who can't read it from the image for any of the many possible reasons.
Endermen are the primary population of the lesser-known third dimension, the End.
Unlike Piglins, they are very similar to humans in shape, though of course not identical.
Their skin tones are consistently a very dark shade with either a purple or blue hue, and their hair and eye colours can vary between green and warm purple.
Endermen have long pointed ears, and their eyes have slit pupils and coloured sclera. Their teeth are white, but their enamel has a pearlescent sheen.
Behind the ears and along the jawline, endermen have a set of transparent fronds. These fronds are specialised magic-sensing organs.
(To the left of this text is a drawing of an enderman as described, with his mouth open to show off his teeth. His hair is a consistent indigo colour and his fronds and eyes are turquoise.)
-
Endermen have a unique secondary pigment in their bodies named vis pigment - usually invisible, vis pigment can develop a colour when consistently exposed to elemental magic for a period of time. It exists alongside a more traditional pigment, and as a result can cause interesting bichromatic effects in the eyes, hair and fronds (the parts of the body that vis pigment can be found in).
Colours such as red, yellow, and warmer hues of greens cannot be found in endermen unless their vis pigment has developed a colour - hues such as those are a sign that the enderman regularly practices elemental magic.
(To the left of this text is a drawing of another enderman, this one having yellow in her purple hair and fronds, and yellow dots in her eyes.)
-
The respawn tell on an enderman is the same as for a human - square irises.
Respawn is oddly uncommon among endermen, for their population density, but there are still a sizeable number of those who have it.
Endermen are rumoured to take longer to respawn than humans; this rumour is false and due to poor statistical analysis. The small number of endermen that take hours to respawn because they get caught up in conversations with Death are outliers and should be considered as such.
(To the left of this text is a drawing of another enderman, smiling at the screen. She has square irises, and the fringe of her blue hair has been dyed rainbow.)
-
'Enderborn' is a name given to humans spawned in the End, an uncommon occurrence but not unheard of.
Enderborn humans are always partially enderman themselves, and consistently have at least one enderman feature, such as the fronds or pearl teeth.
Endermen are almost always adopted into an enderman family - not officially, given that most spawn as adults- an- d even those that leave the End to live in the overworld tend to have a family back in the End they visit, sometimes even carrying the family name with them.
(To the left of this text is a drawing of Rythian Enderborn, a character from the minecraft series The Blackrock Chronicles. He has square purple irises with blue flecks, and fronds that are a gradient from purple to blue.)
At the bottom of the image is a drawing of an eye with a cyan sclera, and a teal iris with slit pupils that somewhat resembles a square eye of ender. There are cyan dots in a semicircle pattern under the eye.
random aeau notes 3: enderman blood, instead of water, contains magic particles in liquid form, making their blood 90% liquid magic (the highest concentration found naturally anywhere.)
Raw magic at such a concentration does not react well to water, which is why endermen have such an adverse reaction to it. Even water just touching the skin can cause chemical burns; god forbid it come into contact with the blood directly.
Random aeau notes #4: me rambling about enderman sensory fronds
Just as a catch-up, sensory fronds are these things:
these are actually not restrained to the au for me, I like drawing these and I like the idea of an organ specialised for sensing magic, so they'll also pop up in drawings unrelated to my AU.
They grow behind the ear and along the jawline of endermen, and can come in a variety of patterns (but always match the eye colours of whoever they belong to)
they can move somewhat - enough to fold back behind the ear for protection or fan out to better sense. it's about as difficult as moving your eyelids (as in, it's not)
an enderman fanning out their fronds really widely is their equivalent of squinting for magic.
they superficially resemble insect wings, although they're less fragile. they're about as resistant as thin skin, so they can be punctured and torn but they're not going to get bothered by, say, smoke or ash like your nose would.
magic in this AU is a particle, in a similar way that light is. therefore, specialised organs are not actually necessary to sense it - just to sense it distinctly from other senses. it's handy but most species get by without it.
I can't accurately describe a sense that doesn't exist, and I'm not a linguist so I'm not confident about making stuff up for it. so any descriptions I write of magic sensed by these will be mostly metaphor. different characters will use different metaphors for how they sense magic.
