Jake looked up from his club sandwich at this. Heād made lunch for them both today rather than grabbing take-out, having found himself hungry after a long day and in need of something packed with a lot of meat. He tended to get cranky when he went a day or two without eating meat so a visit to at the local deli provided him with more than enough meat for the next few days. They would take turns buying groceries as needed whether it was for his place or hers; the two of them found that the domestic life was something that worked for them surprisingly well. Jake didnāt mind settling in one place if it meant seeing Sherry as much as possible. It had been a couple of months since they made it official but had not yet taken the step of moving in together.
And as for kids, well, they hadnāt talked about that yet eitherāit hadnāt come up.Ā The hypothetical question caught him off guard and it showed with how he ceased chewing and stared at her in slack-jawed confoundment. A sudden feeling of disquiet rose within him but he managed to swallow it down along with his mouthful of food. Dark blue eyes were watching him in a measured gaze. Jake really wasnāt one for jokes... and she wasnāt smiling or laughing. Still, he couldnāt get a good read on her.Ā āWell, I wouldnāt be a deadbeat like my own father.ā He sipped from his can of soda while choosing his words carefully.Ā āI donāt know anything about babies. Iām an only kid, like you.ā Here, he shrugged dismissively.Ā Like his opinion didnāt matter much.
āBut Iād take care of them. And you.ā
