I f ucking hate da vinci resolve with a fiery passion.
It is the clunkiest, most unintuitive pile of garbage I've ever used to edit a video. Nothing ever works the way you think it will. YOU CAN'T MOVE THE PLAYHEAD WITH THE MOUSEWHEEL. It's click and drag (too fast, snapping is WAY the fuck too aggressive) or hold down the arrow keys (way too fucking slow). Both ways hurt my wrists, which means I can't work on a project for more than about an hour before I have to stop or I get a tendinitis flareup AGAIN.
I taught myself adobe premiere, photoshop, minecraft and vintage story modding, and I've been playing Dwarf Fortress since goddamn 2007. I am no stranger to steep learning curves. But I swear to the fucking devil himself this software was designed specifically to piss me, personally, off, as much as possible.
I'm trying so hard to get away from adobe. Premiere has its own mountain of bullshit that makes it hard to use at times. It crashes a lot. It's laggy.
But all the controls do what you think they will. Everything works the way a sane, rational human being would expect it to work. And you can customize every aspect of the workspace. You never use that panel? Remove it, make more space for other stuff. Even simple bullshit like: you have several tracks selected, and only want to select one of them? No problem, just click that one, and the others will deselect. done.
In Resolve you can't just click that one! Well you see that one is already selected, along with those other tracks. So if you want to ONLY select that track, you ahve to fucking click somewhere else to deselect all the tracks, then click again to select the one you want.
want to adjust the length of this track? SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER, you ahve unknowingly ALSO adjusted the lengths of several other tracks which were NOT EVEN ON THE SCREEN AT THE TIME which were somehow connected to the track you were adjusting. want to move the start of track 3 from 1:05 to 1:15? HAHAHA GUESS WHAT you have ALSO moved the start of track 1 from 0:40 to 0:50, and the start of track 7 from 9:22 to 9:32! I know, right? What a fun surprise to discover AN HOUR FROM NOW when youa ctually look at those sections and can't figure out why the sound is all out of sync!!!!!
It's small things. small things I have never ever ever ever once not once had an issue with in premiere. It's just a billion fucking small things that add up to an endless series of poison damage that never goddamn ends no matter how hard I try to get used to this software from hell.
the project i"m working on is fucking enormous. it's going to take hundreds of hours to edit and it's goign to take twice as long as it would have in premiere because every two minutes something has gone wrong AGAIN and I have to figure out if I can fix it or if I have to undo the last several hundred actions until it resets itself!
I'm trying so hard to get away from adobe. Resolve is the program most people seem to recommend but I can't fucking understand. I can't get my head around how anyone finds this to be a good and useful program. yes, it's free unless you want a professional license, and I approve of that. I approve of the fact that the license isn't a subscription, that the software isn't predatory.
But why is all the non-predatory software such a pile of unintuitive jank???? When I asked support for help rebinding the playhead or adjusting the layout of my workspace they told me essentially "we don't think anyone should need to do that" and that was the end of the conversation. "Fuck you, deal with it or go crawling back to adobe."
I might have to. I might have to go back to premiere, much as I loathe that company, because I've spent about a dozen hours now trying to orient myself in Resolve, reading tutorials and watching videos and frantically searching the internet for help. Even the people using it are as insufferable as the world's snobbiest linux user. Literally saw someone ask a simple question and get the response READ THE MANUAL.
Hey friends. the manual is OVER FOUR THOUSAND PAGES LONG. I AM NOT FUCKING JOKING.
I just don't know if I can do this. I'm at my wits' end. I want to cry and scream and punch whoever decided it shouldn't be permissible to bind the playhead to a scroll wheel.
going from premiere to resolve is like going from a highly customized high-end computer that has everything set up exactly as you like it, to a cheap apple phone that doesn't think you should be allowed to wear wired headphones.
I don't really have a point here I just spent almost two hours doing something that would have taken me twenty minutes in premiere, not because I didn't know how to do it, but because everything kept fucking up in weird ways and I had to keep backtracking to fix it. over and over and over again.
and if I didn't vent a little bit I might have actually punched the (brick) wall and broken my fucking hand.
