Seasonal love was a love that rides the tumultuous wind and was just as capricious as the flora that bloomed and withered. Seasonal love was an innate entity that resounded within the constant beating in your chest, bubbling with emotions and spilling memories. You often sought out for the warmth in every season: the thawing of the frigid volatility that was associated with the unmatched wavelengths, the blooming of kisses and sex did right again and the sweltering comfortability and content that came from mere simplicity but never the mundane.
You, as of now, were experiencing autumn. This autumn was colder than most.
A breeze that was cold to the touch, letting that shiver slither down your spine to have you curl your toes. The scarf that you had wrapped around your neck did nothing to warm the trachea that froze like an icicle, waiting for the time that it would crash into the walls of your empty chest cavity. If words of love were the warmth that you were desperately seeking out for, then your ribs would just continue to crack from within, till the one and only beating organ lulls to a deep slumber to the sound of the weeping, wilting trees.
You often looked at the empty sky that stretched for miles and felt a certain comfort in knowing that you were not alone, just as melancholic and lonely.
You knew this seasonal love was an anchor in all the relationships you ever had. You had witnessed time and time again how the love you bore for your past lovers ran deep and true only to stop for the never-ending winter. Truly, how was it that you were supposed to be in love, and you were, only for it to fade just as fast as you did plunging heart first.
You looked up from your phone when a message on a personâs arrival came through. You saw the figure, small at first, came into a clearer view. You waited till he reached where you sat, all the while smiling sadly to yourself. You took in the pale cheeks that youâve playfully kissed so many times, the thin lips that curled to the heavens when your very own whimpered his name and the eyes that stared at you so deep that you wondered if he could see that you were probably going to shatter his heart into oblivion in a matter of a few minutes. You took in his every feature and carved them deep into your bones, had them soak into your carmine essence and be one with your every membrane.
Because you truly loved him, you really did.
Your very own lover. Your very own person. Your very own precious Namjoon.
You watched him reach out to you first, cold fingers wrapping around yours as if trying to meet the nostalgic heat to warm him up. You, however, relished on his smooth fingers that you once thought fit right into the spaces between your own, that once filled the distance with his overwhelming but welcomed presence. Now, it felt just like any other hand.
âHey.â
âHey yourself.â Namjoon helped you up and you let him hold your hand as the both of you head over to the cafe the both of you frequented in summer but not anymore. He told you about his music and how it was in SOTA where every student was amazing at their own craft. It was a boarding school and the last time you met him was three months ago. Three months ago, you felt the passion sizzling into a slow breather, knowing full well that it would stop altogether. Youâve felt it a countless of times and this time, it wasnât any different.
You wondered if waiting any longer would perhaps change something, to discover that spark like long lost treasure. Or would waiting some more would be impertinence on your part.
The both of you went to the cafe and ordered. Taking a seat beside the window, you marvelled at the couples that walked past, with their hands intertwined like yours were but albeit a little different. Their bodies were pulled together by the strings of fate, eyes that stared at each other akin to the grandeur of the stars in the bruised sky. You wondered if the red string between you and Namjoon were cut, or were you just in delusion, desperate to cure the feeling of isolation deep within you. A dark mirage that had its hands on you, the weight of its grip pushing you further than gravity would allow you to.
Namjoon questioned whether you were doing okay in your job and you told him that journalism was tolerable. You had assignments here and there, most of which that you had to bring back home but the cranking up of words for your narratives with the hum of the television in the background distracted you from the utter silence that awaited you at the end of your one-sided conversations. You didnât tell him of the empty fridge, the pile of laundry that piled up over the weekends and the dust that clung to every corner of the walls. Instead, you told him of the painting that you worked on but never finished, complained about the distasteful cafeteria lunch and the wrecked air conditioner that was blasting frigid air, one that nobody bothered to fix.
There was a lull in the conversation, a pause that was light as it was heavy. You stared at the cup of coffee in front of you, watched as the milk sunk to the bottom as you stirred the spoon. You felt his hand on yours before you heard his voice that trembled slightly if you focused enough.
âHey, look at me.â You looked up, as you were told. His heart-searching, yearning but the gates to your heart was closed shut, locked. The key that you gave him no longer fit into the new lock you had to change it to.
âStill beautiful despite the eye bags.â You figured that he was saying in jest but you saw the ends of his lips faltering and you now knew that he knew. Perhaps from three months back or perhaps, even longer than you had realised.
The words that you had prepared died at your lips like the dying leaves that committed that last plunge into their irreversible end. Your heart rung hollow, the echoes fading once it reached your throat. If Namjoon was selfish to prolong a relationship that had the end already stamped halfway through its first few chapters, then you were the devil that allowed it.
The both of you talked some more, filling the silence with small talk that was reserved for strangers. The both of you talked until the sky got a little bit more gloomy, a little more melancholic. Namjoon was waiting for you to finish your coffee that had already turned cold before the both of you exited. You tightened the scarf around you, exhaling the cold from deep within you.
âSo, Iâll see you in summer?â Namjoon was the one who asked and you nodded, your hesitance showing. You wondered if the both of you could survive the dead cold winter to even reach the warmth that has long eluded your touch. Would waiting for that sheer happiness and absolute tenderness drown the very prickling of desolation and utter numbness?
You looked at Namjoon and failed to see the red string that connected the both of you. Perhaps you were truly pushing it.
Namjoon pulled you into his embrace, his body heat somehow scorching in the most freezing manner. He lingered for a while, letting his lips imprint his presence on your forehead as if to remind you again that he was still there, that he still loved you.
âDonât give up just yet.â He broke out into a grin and you imagined him pushing the cries and his innate desire for you deep within himself that he would need time to unravel everything, lest they tumble out onto the asphalt for everybody to see. You imagined him protecting the small flame of the love you supposedly shared, against the constant breeze that threatened it to flicker into absence with his two hands as you merely watched. Just as you watched him walk away.

When you cracked your eyes open, everything seemed to turn an entire one eighty. The air was too crisp, one that possibly scratched the walls of your trachea. It hurt for you to even breathe, a concept that was all too familiar. White walls, stiff bed. Everything was distasteful but familiar, and maybe you should find gratefulness in that even if you had to scour at every cranny of your universe.
You pushed yourself up, your arm shaking as you did. Frowning, you were reminded of the circumstances that you were in. How you wished you were back in your dream where the sky was limitless and you could jump as high as you wanted to and still revel on its vast grandeur despite not being able to touch it. A dream where you could run as fast as you can, as far as you can, without crippling under your very own weight with just a few steps.
Or a dream where it was pitch black. Both were favourable, you supposed.
Quickly, you noticed your regular nurse standing at the door, peeking in but never really going any closer. The both of you made eye contact and she clearly flinched as if your very presence was threatening. Which was laughable because she would have ample time before you could land a strike that was equivalent to that of a babyâs.
âSomething wrong?â She flinched again before shaking her head, taking tentative steps at your direction. You watched as she prepared the items before changing your IV tube.
âDo you feel okay?â That was a question that required no answer from your part because clearly, being strapped on a hospital bed was far than okay. But of course, you knew you feeling okay was slightly different than most.
âPeachy.â
You noticed the slight tremor of her lips and you wondered what went wrong. You felt burdened because you actually liked the nurse that was assigned to you.
âIf there was something wrong, you can just tell me you know. Me dying shouldnât excuse my bad attitude.â
Her reply was instantaneous. She paused whatever she was doing, sharply turning her head to your direction, her countenance full of determination and courage that you wished you couldâve adopted.
âNo! Of course not! Youâre not going to die! Youâre doing splendidly on your rehabilitation! Everything will turn out okay and theyâll find a cure soon so youâll be able to do everything that youâve been wanting to do.â
Frankly speaking, the both of us knew that her words were just wishful thinking if anything. The researchâs progress was painstakingly slow and by the time that they finally obtain the answer, you would be reduced to dust. Dust that would cease to exist and somehow knowing your end was morbidly comforting.
There would be a time where you would stop suffering.
But you didnât say that. You searched for the comfort in the nurseâs honest eyes and you smiled. âCanât wait.â
âŠ
Being in solitude for most parts of the day had its perks. For one, it meant that there wasnât anymore pricking and prodding from people that could only sympathise and try their best to empathise but deep down you knew, they were just relieved that they didnât have to bound by a fate like yours. Humans were hypocritical at best.
This led you to dwell into the prospect of living the world that was vastly different than the one you had now. A life where you could puff your chest out without falling back to the chair as if you doing such a simple act took too much from you. A life where you wouldnât bite your words, feeling them stuck deep in your stomach and no matter how much you curse at yourself, the words would come out like a broken recorder. A life where you wouldnât stop talking altogether. A life where you could run, feel the wind under your arms trying to lift you up to the very sky. The rush of air, the hard beating of your heart against your chest as a reminder that you were alive. Alive and living.
A life like Jungkookâs.
Despite it being a dream, it gave you so much respite that it made you breathe easy. A dream that brought so much hue as compared to the very monochromatic room that reeked of sanitizers. A dream that you made you remember the life you once had.
Once had, that being the keyword.
It had been a few months since you had this damned illness and whilst there were still some things you could do, the prospect of knowing your end was a little overwhelming. Whenever you did a menial thing such as writing, you knew that one day your fingers shake too much for your writing to even be legible. Such small things, there was always this ticking clock at the very back of your mind and honest to god, you tried to be positive. You tried to look for the brighter side of things.
But when you couldnât reach the lavatory in time, you mentally broke down as you suffered the humiliation of the excretion just flowed down your leg.
That bright light you should see at the end of the tunnel? You stopped searching.
You reached out for your wheelchair that they left at your side, your arms shaking as you do so. But like all things, the smallest things proved to be a bit too herculean for you. Your upper body was too far out from the bed that you didnât even register that you were actually falling head first. The IV tube that connected to your arm pulled the stand along with you and it clanged onto the railing of your bed to only punch you in the stomach. You cried out in pain, not only from your stomach and head injury but also from your bruised pride.
You ignored the pain and crawled towards your wheelchair, dragging your useless legs across the clean tiles and you hissed at the burn. You placed your elbows at the edge of the seat when you heard the door of your room opened and the nurse from before rushing towards your direction. Ignoring her calling your name, you gritted your teeth as you tried pushing your weight up. There was pure determination that fired up from your insides, masking the anger and resentment that were directed to nobody but yourself.
âHere let me help you, dear.â She tried to take your elbow but you slapped her arm away. But god bless her heart because she immediately reached out to you despite the rejection. But her touch whilst kind was just aggravating. It was the kind of kindness that shed too much light on your incompetence.
âLet me just help you.â
More kindness. More hatred. More self-loathing.
âI DONâT NEED YOUR HELP.â
Two erratic heartbeats.
Your loud breathing.
The ticking of the clock.
Her frozen hands.
And you just broke. Again.
No matter how much you tried to fix yourself, you kept falling down and down. It was akin to you being in a well with no ladder up. You had no way of escaping as you watch slowly as the opening gets blocked, the light diminishing slowly like an eclipse. It was terrifyingly permanent and just not as beautiful.
Your elbows shook and you let go of that fictitious bravado that you previously held onto. You let yourself fall onto the ground, your pride and your resolve come gushing out of your body in the form of salty tears, staining your cheeks with pain and sorrow.
You didnât apologise. You didnât apologise for the hurt you mightâve caused because the very first person you have yet to say sorry towards for your terrible words, was yourself. So you didnât apologise.
The heart of a person never truly changed and you saw it when the nurse pulled you in her arms, consoling you with her comforting hand that stroked your trembling body that was wrecked with sobs. The words that left her lips were like that of a motherâs, cooling your troubled heart with ease.
âItâs okay, sweetheart. Itâs okay.â
You buried your face in your hands, shaking your head as you did so. âOnce I canât walk anymore, once I canât speak anymore. Once I am nothing but a shell, can you even call me a human?â
She rocked you in her arms, trying her best to take the pain off your chest. But you merely passed it to her, now that one of your shoulders was wet. But she stopped reassuring everything was okay.
âŠ
The nurse had helped you on the wheelchair and took you around the hospital block so as to get fresh air. A celebration, she supposed, because it was going to be your final visit of the month and you would get to go back to school. You were supposed to be ecstatic but there were only so many times you would let yourself be happy of your release when you were going back to the hospital again.
But she insisted that you get a fresh air and that was what you did. It calmed you a little bit.
She then brought you in your room and plugged in the IV tube in your forearm. The drugs did their job and you were soon drifting to a place of non-reality, a delusion that you would willingly drown yourself in.

Before you ask, yes. This one shot has no member whatsoever. Itâs intentional. This one shot gained its inspiration from the Japanese war, and how the Koreans were treated in the country. I read Japan: A Self Portrait, a book that I stumbled across for my photography major and itâs a book that I would most definitely recommend. Anywho, Koreans who were brought into the country had to adopt a Japanese name and were forced to learn Japanese. Their identity was something that was totally stripped away from them. Thus, thereâs no specific member that Iâm writing for seeing as how it went well with the plot as a whole. Anywho, hope youâd enjoy!! :))

It had been two months since the table beside yours went unoccupied, void of the warmth of the living that used to sit on that very same chair. Â It became cold even though the summer air had you perspiring in its unforgiving sweltering heat. It became a plateau for the dust to dance in front of an audience that reeked of childish sweat. It became a constant presence that was paradoxically eluding, a presence that stamped itself in your memories but never there to brand itself in your present.
His name was Takashi. A boy that you had befriended when you were merely ten. A boy you believed was so beautiful that you knew that you were blessed by the heavens because that beautiful boy had a firm hold of your heart as the years go by.
He came into the class with an ashy expression that was so grey that you had to look away when his eyes came in contact with yours. You knew he was different, everybody knew. He had the face so familiar yet had facial features so distinctively disparate than those that you surrounded yourself with. He was beautiful.
The table beside yours was empty and it was the very same table that the teacher decided to have Takashi sit beside you. He would nod his head, void of emotion as if the very universe that had painstakingly create such a fascinating living being, had robbed him of the one thing that had made him human. Safe to say, you left your relationship just like that. As desk mates.
The school wasnât technically a school. It somehow became a euphemism, a label so that would satiate the subconscious of the older generations in the country. Instead of being an institution where you should be left in awe with the advancement of science or be brimming with conflicting emotions that would have your heart crushed but racing from a piece of literature, the only thing that you were taught was on to survive.
Most mornings started with the reiteration of running from anything and everything that screamed danger, run or youâd die. Spines too stiff, blonde hair that was a few shades darker than the dirtied ground you walked on, artillery that was pitch black to be stained with carmine that would run down like silk. Warning signs that would get you to run to the nearest shelter, huddled to the very corner with hopes that the man would not hear your heart beating too loud that it reverberated through the still air. Your scraped knees were evidence of your fear, every time you would trip and fall because your shaky legs gave way with the deafening sound of the airplanes gliding through the air. Airplanes that shook your heart, creating an abyss for it to drop into whenever you saw red and white stripes, where a single red dot should be.
In the afternoons, you and your peers would go to the field and masked the amateur fighting techniques were taught by your teacher. The girls technically didnât have to partake in the class seeing as how you were not going to be drafted for the military but the school would rather grace you with a fighting chance than to leave you to blindly run into to the sharp blade wielded by a man driven by apathy.
It was one of those afternoons that you had your very first interaction with the boy. The small group of girls in your class had just finished with your physical activity and you were on your way to the toilet when you caught his familiar silhouette. Your feet automatically shifted back and you figured that you would just leave him alone. However, when you witnessed his back flinching twice, you meekly walked towards him with caution. Over his shoulder, you watched his fingers fiddled with the red lines that drew blood all over his legs. Dirt smeared on his skin like creepy crawlies drawn towards his wound and bells were ringing in your head. The image of your mother rushing you to place your wound under running water was so innate in you that you didnât register that you were gently pulling him up. It was only when you were back on the field with your water bottle in your other hand that made you realised that you were actually touching a boy. Not only that, he was a boy that probably disliked being touched if the hot stare on your back was anything to go by. And so, you immediately let go of his hand.
You turned to him and put up the water bottle as if it was a white flag, to show that you meant no harm. Besides, what could you possibly do? The skills taught to the girls were nowhere as complex as the ones the boys had to learn. You harming the said boy was out of the question.
âHi. Hello. I umm, saw that you had that wound so I thought that maybe I could clean it.â You fiddled with the hem of your shirt and your heart was pounding against the web of your ribcages. You didnât realise that you were holding your breath until you felt fresh air floated into your system when Takashi nodded his head slightly.
So you had him sit on a curb, although this time, you made sure that your skin didnât nuzzle his. You gestured for him to prop up his scraped knees, issued out a small apology before proceeding to push the skin at the edge and pour your bottle contents onto his wounds. Takashiâs hisses brought about the life drawn to the calf in a form of scarlet spidery webs. You poured the entire contents and you were somewhat satisfied when the wounds were clean.
You then capped your bottle and looked at him who was blinking at his wounds, dazed. âYouâd have to go to the nursing room to have them treated.â
Your words popped his bubbled reverie and he requested for your company to the room after he registered your words.
âI donât know where it is,â he added when he sensed your hesitation. You paused still, wondering if your friends would mind if you were going to be late but you figured it would be better to guide the new boy before he got lost.
And so you spent the next class helping him to the nursing room where he got himself treated and even accompanying him as he rested.
Takashi wasnât built to be as intimidating as the country wanted its boys to be but puberty did mould him into somebody such that your eyes refused to leave his form, your heart was adamant to quiver for. His shoulders became broader, he shot way passed you and his face cultivated its own space in a dark alcove of your chest.
Takashi stopped being beautiful. He became ethereal.
You fell in love.
After that small incident to the nursing room, you found yourself by his side. At first, you figured that your natural gravitation towards the boy was courteous at most. You were the only person who had taken the initiative to pass the wall that he had built, too young. You were the first person to move the black veil that enveloped his small, younger frame. Thus, you were the only one he knew and you had this sense of obligation to just be there.
Years after, however, you realised that Takashi wasnât just a friend to you. You viewed him more than how just a friend would. You often smiled bitterly at the thought of the both of you being an actual couple. You had too many things to think about: the household that was struggling to balance on its tip with an absent father that left for the war and a mother that was working odd jobs to get food on the table. You were too busy taking care of your younger siblings, feeding them sweet potatoes that you farmed at your measly garden at the back of your house.
The only time that you got to spend time with Takashi was strictly at school. Except for that one time where you decided to go to his house. School was sporadic because of the war but every time there was, the table beside yours were empty. You figured that your friend was sick seeing as how it was the third time then and your heart thrummed painfully in the empty void of your chest with worry.
You knew Takashi lived a few blocks away and it took a while for you to navigate down the streets that were so unfamiliar. But your anxiety simmered down when you found a house that fit his description. He didnât say much but the fact that his last name was on the front gate probably helped tremendously. (It helped a lot.)
Your insides coiled tightly with every second that passed after you knocked on the door. You almost turned around to walk away but the door to his house opened. The person that greeted you was not your friend but the resemblance pegged her as a family member. It was the very first time in your five years of friendship that you had the opportunity to meet his family member. In any other circumstances, you would have immediately warmed towards the important people of your favourite person.
But you found your smile froze in place, tight and thin as it wobbled slightly at the corners. The woman that held onto the door was staring at you, blank at first before there was a sudden fire that lighted deep in her eyes. She took steps towards you, aggressive and forceful that you stumbled back. You knew even when you were just fifteen, that you were unwelcomed. You voice was caged deep within your trachea and it refused to emerge even when your insides were trying to push it out.
âWhat is it? What do you people want? Are you going to mock me too? Your people are the reason why Iâm here. Your people took everything away from me. Everything! You took everything!â Her words came in shouts and like her hands that grasped onto your bony shoulders, they shook your entire body. Her tears of anguish brought about your own and you didnât even know why you were even tearing up. Every bit of oxygen left your lungs and they stuttered from the shock. Your eyes stayed on hers that were growing even more frenzied and you yourself was breaking down along with her because you didnât know what she wanted nor did you have an answer to her questions.
The fear that crawled along your veins managed to grapple your insides finally let go when the lady stepped back and it took you awhile to realise that there was a hand placed on her shoulder. When you trailed it back to the owner, you saw the face that your heart ached for, but not really.
Takashi wasnât looking at you then but his solemn stare was directed at the lady. âMother, please go back in the house. Kikyo is crying out for you.â
You watched as his mother regain her senses before she nodded, walking back into the house with her shoulders hunched. It was as if the world had dumped every of its burden on a frail woman and your heart clenched because you knew, she was struggling to keep herself up.
âWhat are you doing here?â His voice and soft touch brought your attention to Takashi. You intertwined your fingers and just his touch managed to assuage your jittery nerves.
âI wanted to see you. You havenât been coming to school so I thought there mustâve been something wrong.â To make sure, you lifted your other hand and place it on his forehead. He wasnât burning up, which was a good sign but your worry wouldnât dispel despite your confirmation.
âIâm fine.â When he saw you frowning even further, he let out a chuckle and lightly squeezed your hand. âReally, Iâm okay.â
âOkay, thatâs good.â You let the seconds passed by without many thoughts except for the relieve that flooded your system.
âWas that your mothe-â
âHowâs Hinata and Natsu?â You blinked at the obvious change in subject but you let it go. Instead, you smiled and told him of that time when Natsu had bumped her head when she and her brother was playing catch.
Your heart sighed when you recognise that look that he gave you, one that was so endearing with eyes so soft as he stared at your face like it held the greatest view in nature that he would ever see. Which of course, was never going to be the case.
The both of you had been talking for just a few minutes when an older lady passed by. You wouldnât have noticed her presence if not for the fact that she had spoken out.
âOh, youâre still here? Go back to where you came from. We donât want your disgusting disease to potentially corrupt this village.â You blinked and was immediately filled with that quiet rage when you registered her words. You didnât fully understand what she meant but you did know that she was insulting your important person and that anger bubbled into words that sat on the very tip of your tongue.
But the sudden tight grip of your hand froze your entire entity and the only thing that took over your thoughts was that soft smile of your friend, a smile that was so painful and sombre. Your insides were crushed.
âItâs okay, just let it go.â Your lips parted to let out a rebuttal but Takashi repeated those words when it was supposed to be you who was the one who was supposed to comfort him. Because you saw the familiar pain that haunted him in the very first few days that you came to know him, and at that very moment, even if you were his friend, you didnât have any power to do anything. You couldnât take that pain away and you hated your incompetency.
You felt his soft hand caress the top of your head, oh so gently for a few moments before he aggressively ruffled your head and you immediately slapped his hand away. He gave you a grin, knowing how it peeved you when your hair wasnât in place. He also knew he was the only one who had the privilege of doing it without any real consequences and he made sure to fully utilised it. It didnât matter, you liked Takashi too much.
âYou should go home. Iâm totally fine now.â Years from now, you realised how the relief of seeing your friend safe and sound had totally blinded you, Takashi wasnât lying but he wasnât telling the truth either.
âWill I see you in school?â There was a pause and your anxiety bubbled just for a bit but the appearance of his comforting smile managed to mitigate them. You would see him again. You would see him again in this chaotic world.
âYeah.â
You did see the boy for a few times before he disappeared altogether. The teacher came with an announcement that Takashi and a few others had gone to cross the border. The information went in your head but never sinking in.
Takashi was never truly Japanese, you realised. He was Korean, a person of a different nationality. And it shook you because something as vital as leaving for another country, or something as minute such as not being from where you were, were totally dismissed in your friendship you shared. You then wondered what else did you not know. You wondered about the details that âTakashiâ had left out, of the details that you failed to realise.
You wondered if the friendship with âTakashiâ was ever real from the very beginning.
You didnât even know his real name.
And so you found yourself staring at the table beside yours that was forever empty, seeing as how the class never changed its seating format. No matter how much your heart yearned for another ruffling of your hair, âTakashiâ was just a mirage that would forever elude your grasp.
And so you bore this sense of loneliness alone, buried under the fear of the planes that flew too close, the dread of having your family torn apart once again. It was enveloped in the sense of worry as you watched your motherâs legs buckled a little more, every day. It wrapped itself with the self-assurance that âTakashiâ would survive through the war, even though there were many times that you knew that it was a mere delusion. The image of his body, stiff and cold, caused you to lose your breath too many times that you pushed it as far as your mind would carry.
Amidst everything, you then had forgotten âTakashiâ whom you dubbed as your mysterious first love. Twenty years passed, in a relatively new country and a new family, the sun was shining down on you rather unforgivingly. Twenty years had passed and you still naturally turned to the voice that eluded you for two decades, a voice that shook you to the bones with so much longing. You laughed even when the tears were shamelessly flowing down your cheeks. You waited for this day for far too long, you hardly remember.
âYouâre twenty years too late, stupid Takashi.â

When you first met Jimin, it was when the sun decided to reflect a shimmering glow on the ocean waves down below. The spring breeze brought a trail of salt in the air, also bringing you a slight solace despite the heat. Whilst munching on a bag of chips, you saw an addition to the group of boys you always hung out with during the summer. He was a tad shorter than most and you were left wondering who the silhouette belonged to.
âJimin,â he said before adding a âPark Jimin.â
You introduced yourself, albeit hesitantly, because he was a newcomer to the group of friends youâve dedicated most, if not all, of your summer breaks with. Having moved house to another state caused you a slight strain on your friendships but you managed. You didnât know how to feel about a boy whom you never met being included because, at the end of the day, it was either you or him being left out of the conversations. You being the past and him being the present.
But as time passed by, it became obvious as to why the boys were so attached to him. Jimin would be the one to bring you a cold can of soda whenever it was too hot. He would give you his time for you to rant your heart out, pouring out whatever that had been weighing on your heart to carve itself on the sand.
He might not be there during the past but he found himself a permanent space in your life just as how the waves curved around your body with such familiarity. He was the ocean in your heart, his voice as the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore. Jimin was the sun youâve watched set when you needed something to placate the agitated nerves in your entity. Jimin was your haven.
You didnât know where it came from but it was Taehyung who called you out on it. Taehyung saw how your eyes lingered on Jimin, trying to memorise the curves of his lips and the joy in his smiles. He watched how your body just gravitated towards his, trying to find something solid to hold on as the both of you laughed and let your body let loose. Taehyung observed how scarlet you would get when Jimin went into your personal space to whisper an inside joke.
âYou like him, donât you?â Your mind had a brain freeze and you werenât sure if it was the slurpie that you were drinking. You choked on strawberry flavoured ice and Taehyung merely laughed at your misery. When you regained your composure, you glared at your best friend and he only replied with the wiggling of his eyebrows. Taehyung was then met with shaved ice crawling down his back where you dumped your remaining drink.
However, his comment was the push that made you answer the nights that you spent talking to Jimin on the phone despite being states away. It made you answer the longing to go back to where the boys were as soon as you stepped in your house where your immediate family lived.
It made you answer why you wanted Jimin to be the first face you see, even when Namjoon shared most of your life looking out for you. It made you answer why you let Jimin hold your hands even if Taehyung was the clingy one in the group. It forced you to answer why you held Jiminâs praise on your dance moves closer to your heart even when Hoseok was the best out of everybody there. It made you answer why you preferred to share the other part of earpiece when Yoongi was there to appreciate the music with you. Or why your heart was full when you watched Jimin took a bite of the cupcake you baked when Jin was just a foot away, doing the same thing. Or the fact that Jimin was the first one you go to open a jar of cookies when Jungkook was in the same vicinity as you two were.
It made you answer a lot of things.
When you went back to see the boys again, everybody was there to greet you. Taehyung with his bone crushing hug. Hoseok with his zealous screaming of your name. Namjoon with the ruffling of your hair. Jin with the squeezing of your cheek. Yoongi with a nod as he took one of your luggage. Jungkook with his cocky smile.
And lastly, Jimin who opened your arms for you to walk in casually and envelope him in a hug of your own. It was too long for a friendly hug and too ambiguous to be anything more.
âHey, I missed you.â You felt his smile against your hair as you breathed in the scent that easily replaced the salty air that you found yourself return to when there was something bothering you.
Jimin easily became your solace.
When you thought everything was the same, you had to retract that statement. You realised how the rest of the boys left the seat next to you empty so that Jimin would fill the gap. You saw how Jungkook had that mischievous twinkle in his eyes whenever he looked at you. You noticed how Yoongi always made Jimin accompany you home whenever the stars would twinkle in the sky. Of course with Taehyungâs constant jokes about how the both of you would sit under a tree and âK-I-S-S-I-N-Gâ, the both of you managed to tune it out but really, who are you joking?
So when the skies were blushing and when the sea was singing, you asked Jimin what the two of you were. You werenât sure what to expect and almost threw your question down to the deep abyss when there was no answer. Perhaps the waves were too loud and you would have to keep that question tucked into the corner of your heart for the day when you would muster enough courage to pluck it out.
But you didnât have to because Jimin turned to look at you. âArenât we dating?â
You blinked. âWe are? We havenât established anything.â
It was his turn to cock his head. âBut we like each other, donât we?â
At that, you sat a little straighter and your mind got a little slower. Jimin who was attuned to your every move, panicked because you were looking at him as if you were going to run away to never see him again. Jiminâs hand hovered on yours, hesitant when you made no move to calm his nerves even with a small smile. When you opened your mouth to speak, Jimin was the one who beat you to it.
âIâm sorry. Oh god, I fucked up. This was Taeâs doing, he told me you liked me and I just assumed that that must be it because ââ
âSo you like me?â He was taken aback on your question and merely sputtered out an âOf course I doâ, albeit a little soft but even with the waves crashing, you were drawn to his words like how the ocean craved for the shore every time it pulled back. You were just that. You craved for Jimin.
âWell, we can now either reward Taehyung for leaking out that secret or kill him for, well, leaking out that secret.â You were furrowing your eyebrows but Jiminâs growing smile was lifting the corners of your lips without a hitch. When Jimin pulled you towards him where your lips finally meet with soft giggles and serene sighs, you knew you were in a state where nothing else would matter.
It was quite some time when the both of you decided to pull away with swollen lips and flushed faces, when Jimin shrugged with a, âWe can always do both.â
