Within this natural world of metabolic balance the mangal – the plant community of the mangrove swamp – operates as a model of the social ordering of plants, demonstrating their migration and coevolution. A study of the mangal offers organisational strategies that afford an opportunity to consider population and performance as environmental drivers negotiating a force-deployed system that fosters adaptation and ecology. This research project takes the mangrove–mangal relationship as a model of response in developing a housing proposal for Hudson Yards in lower Manhattan. Computational frameworks are used to integrate a dynamic structuring of bundled aerated roots that iteratively version options for optimising trajectory and path, moving towards a four-dimensional network of emergent organisations. These choreographies of thrust lines are informed as set out trajectories constructing an integrated urban system of ground and vertical housing typologies that extend the existing infrastructure through horizontal to vertical migratory populations of unit distribution.
