like i remember reading romeo and juliet in high school and finding it too posh, too sad. but as an actor you realise that it's not posh, it's just how he wrote, and also... it's not sad. it's just a play. doesn't matter how many high literature interpretation and analyses you put onto it, it was meant to be played. both senses of the word, you know.

if you remember it's just supposed to be a play, you can breathe. the deaths are no definite. they're supposed to happen, again and again, in thousands of other stages. romeo and juliet are supposed to fall in love again and again, hamlet is supposed to stay in elsinore again and again. everything was written taking into account that an actor would come up, steal a name for a while and then brush it off and go home

there is no tragedy in that, quite the opposite. tragedy would be if that's the definite answer, the last word. but romeo and juliet and hamlet and ophelia and laertes, they all get to live again and again, in a thousand difference faces. to experience a thousand different things. there is no tragedy on that, only an exploration of life.
