We had a freezingly wonderful and fun team building event with one of Malaysia's most influencial financial institutions, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad, at Perkasa Hotel (Kundasang) last weekend. The group flew over from Peninsular Malaysia to the beautiful Kundasang town to have their meeting and was kind enough to enquire us at Asia Ability Creative Team Building to customize a team building activity for them (thank you so much for choosing us!). There were about 60 participants and they were divided into several smaller groups.
During the Team Challenge activity, the teams are tasked to complete a series of team challenges. The number and type of challenges are uniquely customized, including activities that require either physical exertion, mental stimulation, or both. The mission is to complete each challenge within the allocated timeframe, with the aim to earn enough money to purchase the goods needed to complete their final project planning task.
Right after the Team Challenge, the teams proceeded to The Ultimate Delivery System activity, where teams must plan and coordinate the delivery of a product, moving through a multi phase systematic product delivery system. Efficiency and effectiveness of the delivery system is put to the test as teams compete to deliver their products safely in the shortest time. Teams are then required to pitch their delivery system by creating a TV commercial targeted at a specific audience.

The tribes gathered that day on shores of Kota Kinabalu, eight tribes of an International Financial Services Firm, 16 warriors per tribe, assembled under the coconut trees with a mission at hand. In our Asia Ability programme, TEAM SURVIVAL, the native yet global tribes named Kadazan, Bajau, Suluk, Dusun, Murut, Rungus, Iban and Lundayeh were at a test of wits and a battle of skills in ancient ritual where the tribes go head to head to prove which tribe is the most glorious as a team and with a true leader.
The warriors were given their instructions, to first embark on their boats and literally seek an island out at sea named Mamutik. Upon their arrival at the island, the tribes first busied themselves in painting their native flags, sprinkled with symbols of their tribal conquests and exploits.
After the 8 flags were hoisted, the tribe members were told that they are now guests of the island and would now have to face 10 obstacles to appease the spirits of the island and not incur their wrath. The great challenges were to first build a bridge out of the most basic tools that nature provides, to shoot blowpipes at the evil demons that roam around a target, to transport water through sheer team power through bamboos hanging in the air, to catapult great rattan balls over the trees and into the holy basket, to eat and stomach a platter of the most dastardly flavors the land has to provide, participants reeling all over the place, retching sounds echoing through the canopy.
It did not end there as the warriors had to embark on a search of a list of items to serve as offerings to the winds and to gain tribal points by showing the quality of their items. They then had to scammer through a battle field obstacle, jumping from hoop to hoop in sand, dampening their muscles, sliding under nets and throwing heavy sacks as a team. They had to fly a flag from a secret location using only ropes to retrieve it from the abyss, and it was topped off when they actually had to trek across the island, through jungle, pure jungle with roots and leaves littering the jungle floor to the other side of the island rewarded with a view of the south china sea it its furthest point, round the beach and back to the challenge point.
There, after the harrowing hours traversing the challenges, the warriors assembled again and the tribal council was called, tribes voting surreptitiously on the tribes that they want eliminated from a challenge, some forming pacts and alliances. After their offerings and were accepted by the spirits, they were then granted leave from the island BUT, they had no way off the island! The eight tribes, nearing dusk and at a time of desperation were given their final task which was to build their own boats to bide their escape. The tribes then forged ahead with another innovative Asia Ability Programme aptly named FLAT OUT AFLOAT, they were given materials and instructions to build a boat out of cardboard but it is in pieces, and needs to come together, only possible with teamwork. The warriors then hastily completed their boats at right at the strike of dusk, eight boats lined the sands of the island ready to be paddled away. The tribes raced and battled in a heated melee of paddles and in the end, all came out victorious. The crowd topped it off with their tribal chants and headed back off to their abodes to drink and revel in their Joyous conquest and none to weep in defeat.
